The Greasy Pole with Sieur Matheus Mallette.
Let me introduce myself, my dear friends. I am Sieur Mallette, the new social correspondent. I am sure you will find that I report on your actions without fear and favour.
Let us get straight into the swing of things, with Paris' favoured son Comte Lagarde de Bearne led the way this month with not one but two Royal Balls. He impressed everyone with his charm and wit at the first ball, although by the second the strain of all that dancing was starting to show! Baron Bonnett and Mlle Valerie also attended. It seems that Mlle Valerie still isn't quite ready for the top echelons of society, although at least Baron Bonnett's dancing lessons are paying off.
Of course, the big social event of the month was the Steeplechase and almost anyone who's anyone was there. Marquis Bougiedure was defending king and country at the front, but kindly allowed Comte Lagarde de Bearne to use his owner's box. (Tragically this was necessary as the Comte makes a better dancer than an horseman and had lost his previous racehorse in a gardening related accident).
Also there were Baron Bonnett and his fiance Mlle Valerie, with their guests Doctor D'Eath and Mlle Calvert. The latter disapproved of the gambling and the drinking and the frivolity, but apparently enjoyed praying in church later in the month.
Monsieur Balls (whose shop was unexpectedly closed all month) was also there with Madame Balls. His Majesty did them the honour of visiting the Royal Box, but sadly felt that the company was rather dull and headed off to find better company. This seems to have been something of a pattern as the Balls held an open house party this month, with the only attendees being the Balls themselves!
Finally, Viscomte de la Azur and Monsieur Balls were seen at the Royal Society Address, mixing with their fellow intellectuals. Naturally I didn't understand a word of it.
