Auguste Balls will submit a treatise on which he was labored concerning the effects of New World Wealth on the economy of France.
New luxuries are now available in Europe that heretofore were beyond the purses of many if they were available at all. Sugar, tobacco and precious metals have altered how Frenchmen live, for the better. At the same time, the wisdom of the French government in avoiding mass conquest and looting (the hallmark of the Spanish Empire) has allowed France to enjoy these things without the costs. This is especially true of the hidden costs of the Spanish system -- namely the sudden flow of wealth has made Spanish peasants and townspeople even lazier and shiftier than before. Louis XIII has established a trading arrangement with the American savages that finds the ideal position that allows the goods in while keeping their negative effects on the economy to a minimum Consequently, whereas the Spanish national character has suffered, the French imperial system actually strengthens the French national character at all social levels.
[OOC: Auguste Balls submits treatise to the Royal Academy. Plays aren't all he writes.]

Monsieur Balls, no mention to cacoa (used for chocolat infusion or bonbons) as the products the New World have made available to us? How do you intend to impress the members of the Royal Accademy with this omission? Comte Hullaume de Déols OOC: RPG note: Huillaume loves chocolate, and has given bombons as wedding presents since Helen wed the Vescomte of Gorne (back in July 1631)

Monsieur le Comte,
You rightly noted cacao as one of the new joys brought into our lives, and I have revised my section on confections to expand on cacao’s effects. In gratitude, I am sending to you a sampling of the various cacao delights that have arrived at Ile de France.
Your admirer,
Auguste Balls Financier
