Reports from the Front by General Georges Boulle (rtd.)
In Memorium: Marshal de Camp D'avranches
I would like to dedicate this article to the memory of Guy D'avranches, a man who was everything a military officer should be. Working his way up the ranks from the Picardy Musketeers, he was not some cossetted fop, but was very much beloved by the common soldiery. His cunning tactics lead to low casualties at the front and even in death he led his men to victory on the field. He will be sorely missed.
Spanish Frontier
Maybe I've misjudged Brigadier-General Lagarde de Bearne. Has to be said, he had another good month, making sure his Brigade did more damage to the enemy than themselves. Certainly did better than the Army commander. Silly bugger went and got himself killed. Heavy casualties in the Spanish Frontier regiment. Looked like Valentino Segal was going to be one of them. Left for dead. Lads thought they'd seen a ghost when he limped into camp the next day. Not sure the poor sod's leg will ever be the same again though.
Mentions in Dispatches: Hulluame Lagarde de Bearne
Medals: Hulluame Lagarde de Bearne (2nd bar on Croix de la Cite)
Permanent Injury: Valentino Segal
Flanders
Another varied month for the Flanders boys. Again, good result from the Frontier Regiment but not so good for the 2nd Brigade. Heroes of the day were the Dragoon Guards though. The success of the 3rd Brigade was almost fully down to them. First time Captain Bougiedure has commanded the regiment (the normal commander was needed in Lorraine) and it seems his experience has come through. Even more impressive was Captain de la Azur and the 1st Squadron. Fought like a demon they did, inspired by the courage of their commander. Seems his Majesty agrees. All rise Baron de la Azur.
Mentions in Dispatches: Jacques Bougiedure, Renald de la Azur
Medals: Jacques Bougiedure (Croix du Roi), Renald de la Azur (1st bar on Croix du Roi)
Lorraine
It was only the brilliance of Marshal de Camp D'avranches that stopped a complete disaster here. Without him, we'd have been overrun. Tragically, as you know, he didn't live to see the fruits of his command. Way too bloody young.
Deaths: Guy D'Avranches
Savoy
Siege bogged down here, although at least the Normandy Regiment shone under their new command. Going to be trying to break the enemy next month. Sensible I think.
Next month:
Spanish Frontier HL 8 Offensive Siege
Flanders Frontier HL 10 WAR Field
Lorraine Frontier HL 10 WAR Defense
Savoy Frontier HL 10 WAR Assault
