Financial News
It seems the financial markets have a new player, with the esteemed merchant Monsieur Durant seen making several investments this month. It seems he is something of a cautious investor, making investments in both arms and finance to cover both bases. Commentators have questioned where a small merchant, albeit a successful one, has come into this kind of money. It has been speculated that Monsieur Durant may merely be the face of a wider financial consortium.
There was unusual demand for mineral water at the emporium of Monsieur Durant in February, apparently occasioned by a Temperance Pledge by one Guillaume Fitzbraose. One understands that Monsieur Durant’s supplies were rapidly depleted by Fitzbraose demanding that his manservant locate supplies from different Sources, as he hadn’t yet tasted a decent one. Stories that Monsieur Durant’s sole supplier was Vichy, but that he had a handy supply of different types of empty bottles, and was a dab hand with a quill and blank labels, are obviously scurrilous.

The Social Whirlwind by Le Mole
Something of a quiet month this month, as many of the gentlemen of Paris took it upon themselves to pursue education rather than excitement. I yawn chaps, I really do.
Perhaps some of this can be explained by the apparently reformed nature of Lieutenant-Colonel Fitzabraose?
There was an amusing incident in the Officers’ Mess of the Picardy Musketeers this month, which led to a delay in the usual post-prandial libations. Decanters had been placed at the right hand of the President (Sieur d’Avranches), and he was preparing to pass them to the officer on his left when the Vice President (Lt Colonel Fitzbraose) stood at the foot of the table, and requested the indulgence of those present. He then addressed his superior, apologising profusely for his behaviour at Court, and blaming his maladroitness on excessive indulgence in alcoholic beverages. He announced his intention of “drying out” in the month of February, and promptly swore an Oath of Temperance – a highly unusual act in an Army Mess! The other officers did not know where to look, and the embarrassment caused in front of the guests of the Mess was only increased when the Steward had to admit to the President that they had no mineral water with which the Vice could join in the Loyal Toast. Having to choose between delaying the Toast while a soldier was sent out for a supply, or forcing Fitzbraose to choose between breaking his oath or abstaining from the Toast, put the Colonel in an impossible position. One can only hope that the Lt Colonel will return to the Front soon, as his lack of understanding of basic etiquette is causing problems for many in Paris!
Sieur d'Avranches at least one can say has not discovered the joys of teetotalism, being seen at both the theatre and more importantly the first night party in the company of Sieur Bonbeur. Monsieur Champ skipped culture entirely, just heading off to his club with Mme. Rohesia and cutting out the boring part. He probably had the right of it as from what I hear this is not a play that will be seeing another run!
Of course, the other big event was the Saint Denis Stakes. Sieurs Bougiedure and Bonbeur were seen socialising again (it seems the two are becoming the greatest of casual associates) in the Pavilion in the company of their mistresses while elsewhere Sieur d'Avranches and Mme. Mimi also soaked up the atmosphere.
A slightly fragile atmosphere in the owner's box of Baron Lagarde de Bearne as the Baron not only failed to see his horse Lucky Star place, but also saw none of the substantial bets he'd placed on his rival's horses come to fruition either. The atmosphere wasn't improved when it came out that the Baron's guest, Sieur de la Azur had secretly placed a bet on the winning horse The King's Sword instead of listening to the supposed expert advice of Baron Lagarde de Bearne. The Crown Prince did visit the box briefly but understandably decided it was not somewhere to be if one wanted a jolly time.

Reports from the Front by General Georges Boulle (rtd.)
We say an increase in hostilities this month, probably the runup to the always tense campaign season.
Spanish Frontier
Our attempts to defend against raids from the Spanish saw mixed results, with the frontier regiment scattering the enemy, but the Normandy Regiment taking heavy casualties from the Spanish raiding parties. The Minister of Foreign Affairs is currently in discussion with the Spanish Ambassador in the hope of deescalating the increasing tension.
Flanders
Flanders saw an increase in clashes, but with no clear victor.
Lorraine
Unexpectedly we saw a massive increase in tensions here, with the enemy launching an increasing number of ambushes throughout the area. With both France and the enemy choosing to increase their activities, this area has moved from the most peaceful to the most hostile seemingly overnight!
Savoy
The big news here was the stand out strategic brilliance of Captain d'Blancheur in the Savoy Frontier Regiment. It is generally agreed that his cautious nature lead to minimal casualties in his company and helped make sure the enemy did not gain an advantage. He will be recognised for his service by the Crown on returning to Paris.
The RNHB had an unfortunate month, with several members being captured by the Austrians.
Titled: Arnold d'Blancheur
Captured: Jacques de Blanc
Next month:
Spanish Frontier HL 6 Skirmishing Field
Flanders Frontier HL 5 Guerilla War FIeld
Lorraine Frontier HL 9 Invasion Field
Savoy Regiment HL 6 Skirmishing Field

ROME and its influence on the Parisian church
By Pastor Jacques
The HERETIC Claud D'Applaud has met his DESERVED end. It seems in his MADNESS he felt it was time to ascend to HEAVEN and climbed to the ROOF of the church where he was STAYING after MURDERING the PRIEST. Watched by the men of the new Commissioner for PUBLIC Safety, his old ENEMY Baron Lagarde de BEARNE who had turned up to assist with the ARREST he rambled something about EAGLES and then LEAPT off the ROOF. As both SUICIDE and HERESY are SINS he will burn in HELLFIRE for EVERMORE as he SHOULD.

Romantic Interlude
By Yvonne de Villepin
I am glad to announce very little this month in the best possible way as several of you settle down to married life and others of you seem to be heading in that direction!!! While normally I would tut at Monsieur Durant's love for the bawdyhouse I shall not this month as he probably only went there because of the cruel nature of Berthelot's heart and besides the mugging he got is enough of a lesson without my involvement!!!
