The current Marriage Rules (Section 8.13) contain numerous duplications and are unclear in parts. I suggest 8.13 is replace by the below. This clarifies a few points and incorporates the revised rule regarding services taking place in the same weeks as their associated gatherings.
8.13 Marriage:
There comes a time in many men's lives when they feel the call of matrimony. Love, wealth, or necessity may bring a man and his love to the altar.
To propose a character and his mistress must have been dating for a minimum of 6 consecutive months. Marriage may also be proposed if a mistress becomes pregnant. Each month, the mistress must make a loyalty check (at -2 unless she is pregnant) to agree to the proposal. If a 6 is rolled there is a 1 in 2 chance she will end the relationship. This can be increased by successful prior visits to her family (q.v.). The Groom-to-be must then seek her father’s approval, necessitating another visit to her family.
A character may choose not to ask about his mistress’ desire for marriage, but instead go straight to her father. Doing things this way around counts as an Indiscretion for the following 3 months, and a loyalty check is made each month. If the check succeeds by 2 or more, she forgives the character and agrees to marry him.
If her father insists on marriage and a loyalty check fails, she goes into the marriage unwilling. She will not count the loyalty modifiers for being Engaged or married, and she may become Vindictive.
Once a proposal of marriage is accepted the mistress is Engaged and this is indicated by an E (engaged) attribute. The character receives congratulations in status points equal to half his mistress’ SL the following month and the wedding must take place within 6 months of the proposal.
Unless another player asks for and receives permission from the character to host it, the groom must host a stag party at some time before the wedding (he is expected to pay all costs). At a minimum the stag party guest list must include all regimental colleagues and everyone of the groom's SL and above (with the exception of members of his enemy regiment). Stag parties are male-only affairs to which mistresses are not admitted. A character attempting to bring his mistress counts as an indiscretion and the character will lose 2 SPs in addition.
The wedding itself takes place in two parts, both in the same week, and since the groom cannot lose SPs thereby (getting an automatic SL rise in the month of the wedding) it is usual for a general invitation to go out to all of Paris (with the exception of the groom's regimental enemies). The first part of he the wedding is the Church Service, paid for by the groom according to rules section 15.12. (If a Clerical PC is a particular friend of the family then he may be asked to perform the ceremony even if not technically within the usual SL range). The second part of the wedding is the Wedding Reception, usually a Ball hosted at the Groom's Club or Private Residence (if sufficiently large) but paid for by the Bride's Father. All guests may toady to the Groom (who gains no negative SPs thereby) or a higher SL NPC Guest of Honour if one is present. The groom receives a dowry of 1d6*25*bride's SL in livres (doubled if she is wealthy) and goes up one SL automatically the month he gets married.
Weddings can take place in the Provinces provided the Bride, Groom or the Bride's Father has an estate there at which to hold the Wedding Reception. Church Services in the Provinces cost half as much as those in Paris, but the Reception will be a normal party, rather than a Ball, if the estate is smaller than a Comté (Comte's Estate).
If a wedding does not take place within 6 months of a proposal the mistress will leave.
