Took a bit longer than hoped (I think a lesson for the future is to make sure all suggestions have their own thread), but here we go. I'm sure I'll have missed some stuff but most things should be in there. Liminal En Garde Revised Rulebook 1.1.pdf (955.88 KB)

A list of changes.
Pay has been nerfed in many cases. (Aware that will be the most controversial one so I thought I'd lead with it. But I'm of the view that the tension between income and social climbing is one of the main things that gives En Garde! its flavour).
Characters wanting to go into advocate/medical careers have a higher ability at start.
Starting languages added.
Wounds now heal the month after they were sustained.
There is now a set cost for practising weapons on your own and strength/con training.
Updated Influence chart with new positions etc.
Doctors now help in pregnancy and duelling cases.
Tidied up the land agent rules and put an example in.
Extended rules for missions.
Removed current rules for regimental chaplains. (I may return to this at some point)..
Theatre rules updated. Note that I have kept the -1 for attending total flops, although this evens out in the case of royal boxes and/or first night attendance. Producers still keep the bulk of the profits; on the grounds they're taking the financial risks and writers/companies are already paid!
Paris Guards aren't in yet; I want to work on them a bit more using people's ideas as a base.
Standarised Military Academy/Ability with the other rules.
Added some rescue modifers
Appointments updated
Coaches updated
Gifts, taxes and wills updated.
Minor changes to horse racing.
You now get less money as a non famous creative than a doctor/advocate, which reverses at higher ranks.
Updated Actor rules. (These don't currently use the ranking system on the assumption most actors will work as playwrights!)
Alterations to the UM rules for Spies.
Merchants can buy and sell coaches.
Rules for NPC ability levels.
Female PC rules added

(I think a lesson for the future is to make sure all suggestions have their own thread), OK. Maybe this thread should be kept to notice of errors / mistakes with suggestions for amendments / additions to the rules in separate ones? On the subject of mistakes, just before 24.10 Staff Commands. Is a pernicious paragraph which should have been removed before the previous draft appeared, but is still managing to sneak in: Section 12.0 Influence and Bribes appears twice. Not sure if they exactly the same in both instances.

OK. Maybe this thread should be kept to notice of errors / mistakes with suggestions for amendments / additions to the rules in separate ones?
That sounds good. Especially the bigger suggestions. As you can imagine, trying to track down the separate theatre posts was a big of a nightmare! Those should be identical (the only update there is the new military ranks) so I can just remove hte first.

As a general point, I'm going to stick to discussions of the new rules for a few days, then open up new suggestions again. (I have a few to bring up, I know Gaston does and others may do as well).

The skill level changes on p. 143 are the old rules.

Some comments Easy part: perceived errata (some of them already carried on from the draft): Since 15:14, the other subsections of the clergy are numbered as 14:15 and 14:16, whie they should be 15:15 and 15:16 (also tables are numbered as 14) 16: The Theatre Royal: in the title of the chapter, its is numbered as 6, not 16. Also, the chapter title is in lower case and not boldened, as others, so making it less easy to find. Subsections go from 16:1 to 16:3, skipping 16:2 24:9 The table for civilian appointments shown only 7 provincial governors, while there are 8 provinces….
The tables in 24.9 show the number allowed for intendent of war as 2, and Secretary of State as 4, while the table in 24:10 shows as 1 and unlim respectively...
24:10 table: the number allowed for Divisional Commanders is set as 1/Army. I guess it should be 1/Division,
The Frontier commander SPs are shown as 4. While it could be, I find it quite low, and I guess you meant 14… 33.7: the money that a private can earn is shown as 13 x 10. I guess it should be 1d3 x 10 Versailles was built by Louis XIV, not even born by the game time, and court rules talk about Tuileries, Louvre and Fontainbleau . IT should be clarified… I guess it whould be final, not finial... This sentence seems unfinished...

31: Provinces;
31.0: travelling to the Privinces
When one character travels to a province, is it for the whole month or he can state how many weeks?
If the former, and assuming he has a Government appointment, can he rturn for the week the government meets (assuming it does)?
31.2 Actions in the Provinces
Attending University or Accademies (Military, Mme Duchesne's...) is not listed among the actions forbidden in the Provinces. I guess they should be (asa I don't believe they exist there, at least to the level the game represents...

I'd leave provinces for now as there's some suggestions coming in that area.

[/div] The Frontier commander SPs are shown as 4. While it could be, I find it quite low, and I guess you meant 14…
I actually meant four, but I agree with you that it's too low! As a suggestion, how about raising division commander to 10 and Frontier Commander to 8? It's a bit less prestigious being at the frontier.

35: Artists/Musicans/Playwrights/Actors and 37: Professionals; Doctors & Advocates
the costs for hiring Artists, Musicians and Doctors are given as 3 numbers (e.g. 20/25/30 in the case of Artists). What do those 3 numbers mean?
In the case of a doctor, the cost is listed as 30/50/70 in 37.9, ut in 17.3 is said that the cost to hire a doctor is 25 per week...
The part for advocates is a bit confusing ,as it begins with 37.8 and 37.9 and all the sudden it is numbered as 38 (a section it does not otherwise exist, BTW)... Also, in 38.9 is said that the cost to hire a Doctor is 30/50/70, whie the rules are talking about advocates (I guess another errata there).
In an ycase, I keep defending that the cost (in both, 35 and 37) should be according the rank . This way, while not knowing the exact skill level, you hire them according their fame (and can gross guess the skill level, as someone that has achieved several triumphant successes cannot have too low skill) , if you can afford it, of course...
35.7: Musicians are sais to be hired for at least 4 weeks. Cannot one hire one for a single week to perform at a ball, should one host one?
