The Social Whirlwind by Sieur Matheus Mallette
Huzzah! The Army has returned victorious to Paris and so has the social season.
The month started off slowly as returning heroes accustomed themselves to domestic life once again. Lord and Lady Balls were seen in a private box at the Theater Royale enjoying the latest production by the Duc of Brittany’s Men. Across town, Lieutenant Lete exercised his privileges as a member of the Horse Guards’ Club.
The second week saw Father William leading a memorial service for the fallen defenders of France at Saint Josse parish where he was quite verbose in his praise of Brigadier Norbert Bussion. The Brigadier was in attendance as were Bishop de Pooh and Chevalier Jose Vendredi. Lord Bougiedure apparently was mistaken as to the location of the service as he showed up at the Cathedral de Norte Dame as was visibly disappointed that only the regular mass was being celebrated.
Not to worry, however. With the dead from the recent Summer Campaign suitably honored, the Grand Duc de Chevreuse held a Grand Ball in the third week, celebrating the heroes returned this month. The grand affair was a parade of the flower of France’s martial might and Chateau Chevreuse was decked out splendidly as one might expect. Notables in attendance were Brigadier Buisson, Lord and Lady Balls, Bishop de Pooh, and a rather out of place Chevalier Vendredi escorting Madam De’Ath. Missing, however, was Lord de Bearne whose absence, despite the general invitation to all nobles, indicates that there is still bad blood between the Grand Ducs.
Lady Bougiedure was brilliant in her role as hostess and Bishop de Pooh was exceptionally witty with his dry but picante observations. On the dance floor, the Grand Duc and Duchess swept away all before them and might have been rivaled in their demonstration of skill by Lord Balls and Madame De’Ath had not their dance partner been so unremarkable. The Commissioner for Public Safety was much better suited to the display of the dance than was Mlle Favre, whose clumsy missteps prove more than a match for Brigadier Buisson skills. The event was such a triumphal success that it is likely to be the highlight of the whole social season.
The reception and Royal Ball for the Foreign Minister from Savoy in the final week was nearly dull by comparison. Lord Bougiedure receive the Legion de Honneur but it was his wife that sparkled most as did Lord Balls who was most engaging to the guest of honor. Lord and Lady Bougiedure once again were complete masters of the dance floor while Lord Ball’s continued to be vexed by his wife’s poor application of her skill.
