The Social Whirlwind by Sieur Matheus Mallette
The winter social season started with a rather muted Debutante’s Ball at Madame Duschene. The field of young gentlemen this year was rather sparse. The only gentleman of note to attend was Father Vincent de Pooh and he spent most of his time moralizing on the behavior of today’s youth.
The second week of December saw the first of two royal balls. This one was in honor of the Foreign Minister from the Duchy of Savoy. The Grand Ducs de Chevreuse and de Deols were both in attendance with their best wit and manners on display. On the dance floor, it was Lord Bougiedure who displayed the greatest form. Lord de Bearne’s audience with the King did not go as well as he would have wished.
The Royal Ball in the next week was a sumptuous affair in the run up to Christmas. Lord de Bearne was once again the pinnacle of etiquette while Lady Bougiedure matched the Grand Duc, making up for her husband’s flagging wit. Lord de Bearne resumed his dominance on the dance floor.
Government meetings closed the month with Lord Bougiedure speaking eloquently on the state of the Kingdom at the end of the year. Lord de Bearne was also in attendance and his wit matched that of the Grand Duc de Chevreuse even though he wasn’t part of the official business. His efforts appear to have paid off in gaining access to the King’s inner circle.
