BREAKING NEWS! Bastian Anton De’Ath Escapes from Château le Petit-Perron
The plea of the self-styled Premier (and popular) physician to the people of Paris, Lord De’Ath, Viscomte de Ploërmel, and the accompanying offer of 2000L to rescue his from his imprisonment appears to have borne fruit. The prison in Lyon, Château le Petit-Perron, was attacked by unknown parties late last month. The garrison of guard, reinforced by the Gendarmes, was successful in repulsing the attackers after a bloody fight that left many of the assailants death. Although his saviors were forced to withdraw, the Viscomte was not to be found. His cell was mysteriously empty.

The Social Whirlwind by Sieur Matheus Mallette
Burgundy was the destination of the Royal Court this month where their Majesties played host to the Viceroy of Naples, Ramiro Núñez de Guzmán. Lords Bougiedure and Balls were both in attendance but it was their ladies that shone brightest at the ball whilst their husbands looked on in mute admiration.
After a week spent hunting, the King presided over the Provincial Parlement. Neither Lord Balls nor Lord Bougiedure, who has an estate in Burgundy, attended. Both Lords returned to Paris in advance of the royal court.

A Romantic Interlude by Comtessa Yvonne De Villepin
Another quiet month with most of the eligible young men off at the front.
Ladies Bougiedure and Balls accompanied their husbands to Burgundy to attend the Royal Ball in honor of the visiting Viceroy of Naples. I am told that the Spanish grandee was much charmed by the wit and vivacity displayed by both.
Lord Bougiedure took advantage of the sojourn in Burgundy to take his wife and son to visit her family. Although adored by his in-laws, If the Grand Duc was hoping to secure some pecuniary or influential advantage from the visit, he was sorely disappointed.
Back in Paris, artist Clement Cadieux’s attempt to seduce Mlle Harbottle came to nought. Perhaps the lady is wanting a relationship of a more permanent nature.
Mdm d’Armagnac withdrew from society again this month, preferring to spend her time teaching others to dance at Madame Duschene’s Academy.

An Ecumenical Matter by Bishop Henry Defour
No sermons of mention this month. Father William took a break from composing to study in the Diocese library while Father Vincent joined Mdm d’Armagnac at Madame Dushene’s to teach etiquette.

Reports from the Front by General Georges Boulle (rtd.)
Success in Lorraine, breaking the enemy siege of Touls.
Flanders Frontier
Maneuver against the Spanish in Flanders results in little gain.
Lorraine Frontier
The battle outside the city of Touls along the Lorraine Frontier was another bloody affair. The Hapsburg general launched a full-scale assault against the French defenders and was successful in getting the 1st Division to withdraw from its position. Only a valiant rear guard action by the French Guard regiment in which its commander was mortally wounded prevented the withdraw from turning into a complete rout. Brevet Captain Febrezan fought most bravely earning one mention in dispatched and a second in-lieu of promotion. He also captured a Hapsburg Major whom was ransomed for a tidy sum.
With the 2nd Division holding firm in its position, the Army Commander was able to unleash the Cavalry Division in a counterattack that broke the Hapsburg infantry, forcing them to give up their newly acquired territory and sending them reeling towards their own lines. The threat of the Cavalry Division, along with the success of the Separate Cavalry Brigade in preventing reinforcements from reaching the battlefield encouraged the Hapsburg commander to withdraw his remaining forces or risk complete annihilation. Lieutenant Buisson of the Dragoon Guards received two mentions in dispatch, one in-lieu of promotion, and some loot from the enemy’s baggage train.
Savoy Frontier
The bumbling Savoy Frontier Regiment Commander, under the direction of the Frontier Brigade Commander, Lord de Bearne, suffered an embarrassing defeat at the hands of the Savoyard rebels and will get to spend an additional month in the field for their (failed) efforts. Lord de Bearne did receive a brevet promotion to Marshal de Camp, owing more I suspect from his patronage than success in Savoy.
Spanish Frontier
A quiet month in garrison for the Frontier Regiment.
Next month:
Flanders Frontier HL 3 Alert Field Operations
Lorraine Frontier HL 10 War Field Operations
Savoy Frontier HL 3 Alert Field Operations
Spanish Frontier HL 2 Garrison Garrison
