As a game mechanic, when a female companion “runs off” with the King and becomes an unofficial mistress, she does not permanently leave the PC. The affair lasts 2D6 months (+1 if beautiful) and then the mistress returns to the character. The character gains a level 7 influence seasonally but suffers from lack of female companionship unless mitigated in another way (going on campaign or to a brothel for instance). I held off on explaining this ruling because I didn’t want to influence the poll of whether or not JBO had cause for a duel
My reason for the ruling is such:
1. The rules are unclear as to whether the PCs relationship is terminated or merely suspended. The rule does use the term “former beau” once but it is implied that a wife will return to her husband (“Citing the King in a divorce case is bad for health and career advancement” and if “his wife finds out, the usual penalties for indiscretion apply”).
2. The mistress providing a level 7 influence seasonally to the PC implies a continued connection.
3. A liaison between a PC and an attached Female Companion does not terminate the relationship with the PC paying for her upkeep except in an extreme circumstance.
4. I was following what Sam (our previous GM) did when Eloise left JBO and “ran off” with the King. Eloise returned to JBO when the affair ended without JBO needing to re-court her.
Players are encouraged to have their characters interpret events as they see fit. In that respect both HLB and JBO were correct in their view of the event and hence the duel. From a game mechanics perspective, however, HLB terminated the relationship with Brigette, lost the level 7 influence, and she will not return to him at the end of the affair.
