The Social Whirlwind by Sieur Matheus Mallette
Summer is full upon us and with it the retreat of the social scene as soldiers head to the front and mistresses de camp for the provinces. Nevertheless, there was still society to be had.
Lord de Bearn was seen much at court this month. During the reception for the envoy from Brandenburg-Prussia, the Grand Duc was extremely well-informed on the situation of that duchy with regards to the conflict with the Holy Roman Emperor. At Royal Balls later in the month, he was more subdue instead letting his mistress, Mlle. Bougiedure show off her newly acquired social graces. The couple took a break from court to attend church in the second week, however.
Lord De’Ath escorted Mlle Chabert to his club, the Fleur-de-Lys, in the second week and to the Royal Ball in the third where the Viscomte was on his best behavior and his companion displayed deft footwork in the ballroom. It is hard to overlook the fact his carriage is not befitting a noble of his station. The balance of the month for the good docteur was spent attending to medical matters.
The widow, Mdm d’Armagnac, doesn’t seem to be letting any grass grow beneath her feet since she parted ways with Lord Lyon. She attend the Theatre Royal on the opening night of The Lion and the Rose and seemed quite at ease in her private box. Later in the month, she spend time at the Rose and Crown but caroused in a most modest manner that did not result in any scandal at all.
