The Social Whirlwind by Sieur Matheus Mallette
One has to wonder what court machinations went on to persuade the Royal Steward to schedule three Royal balls in a single month.
The first week of November saw the arrival of Duke William George, Elector from Brandenburg-Prussia. The Duke was in Paris to consult with Cardinal Richileu and other members of the government in the ongoing conflict between Sweden and the Holy Roman Empire. A ball was held in the Duke’s honor which was attended by the usual luminaries of Parisian society, including the Grand Ducs de Chevreuse and de Deols. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lord Lyons escorting Mdm d’Armagnac, got into a heated discussion with the Royal favorite, the Duc de Vendome, over the propriety of supporting a Protestant state over a Catholic one but this was largely overshadowed by the wit and vivacity of Lord and Lady Bougiedure. Lord Lyon and Mdm D’Armagnac put on a display of French skill in the dance. Over at the gaming tables, Lord de Bearne was seen betting (and losing) rather heavily.
The next week saw a second Royal Ball, this time celebrating the elevation of Lord Bougiedure to Duc de Guyenne with significant additions of land to his estate in Languedoc. The Grand Duc was uncharacteristically dull giving a turn to the widow d’Armagnac to display manners and wit whilst Lady Balls made her own humble education quite evident. On the dance floor, Lady Bougiedure shone despite her advancing pregnancy. Although he was much in the presence of the King and Queen this evening, Lord Bougiedure did find time to meet with the Baron de Torcy.
The third week saw a pause in the breakneck pace of events as the Royal Steward to pity upon the feet of Their Majesties leaving the court to shift for themselves in finding entertainment or employment. Lord de Bearne is rumored to have returned to his canvasses while Lord Bougiedure lectured on the finer points of financial management at the university. Lord Lyon escorted Mdm d’Armagnac to the Fleur-de-Lys.
The final week of the month saw yet another Royal Ball celebrating nothing in particular. Lord de Bearne emerged from a very satisfactory audience with the King, whispers of an additional title following in his wake. It was the Grand Duc de Chevreuse, however, who demonstrated his dominion over both the court and dance floor that enabled him to surpass the Duc de Vendome as a Royal favorite.
On the way home from the Royal Ball, Lord Lyon was beset by goons. His injuries are not expected to prevent his participation in any Affaire d’Honour that may or may not take place.
