The Racing Form by Lancelot Lémieux
The Steeplechase was an exciting conclusion to the ’35 racing season. Silvermane was quickest out of the gate and lead going into the clubhouse turn. Pursuit of the Grand Duc de Chevreuse’s horse was intense as six horses formed the pack along the backstretch. But it was Silver Kitten who caught Silverman in the final turn and in the straightaway the favorite’s age is beginning to show as the Grand Duc de Deol’s horse put on a final burst of speed to win by horse length. The Belle of Languedoc crossed third ahead of Sir Coco and a three-way tie for fifth!
Results Win – Silver Kitten Place – Silvermane Show – The Belle of Languedoc Black Rose 4th – Sir Coco 5th (tie)– Lady Arabella 5th (tie) – Five Livres 5th (tie) – Big Brown 8th – Sea Fury 9th – Athena 10th (tie) – Wildflame 10th (tie) – Wilting Thistle 12th – Black Rose 13th – More Diamonds 14th – La Grand Rue

The Social Whirlwind by Sieur Matheus Mallette
The month started with the opening night performance of Lord Ball’s latest production, Left Bank Story, at the Theatre Johi. Lord Ball’s was in his element as he hosted Lord De’Ath and Mdm d’Armagnac in his private box. The Grand Duc and Duchess de Chevreuse we seen sharing an intimate evening in their own private box. Lord De’Ath and Mdm d’Armagnac also attended the opening night party at the Fleur-de-Lys.
The Steeplechase was similarly well attended by the Paris’ elite. Lord Huillame, accompanied by Brigette Bougiedure, hosted Lord and Lady Bougiedure in the Grand Duc de Deol’s owner’s box. Not to be left out, Grand Duc Maximilian joined the other Grand Ducs for wine and conversation. Lord Bougiedure’s disappointment at his horse losing to his host’s was somewhat mollified by seeing his sister so advantageously matched to his friend.
The social scene was much subdued in the third week as the Annual Reception and Dinner of the Royal Academy of Science was held at the Fleur-de-Lys attended by Lord Balls. Lord Huillaume attended to government duties, Lord Bougiedure instructed at the University de Paris, and Mdm d’Armagnac spend the evening at her club.
The final week of October saw Lord Huillaume and Lord Bougiedure at government meetings. Even the most jaded of us was impressed by the Controller-General of Finance’s exceptional oration in front of not only the assembled ministers but in his private audience with the King. One expects that the Grand Duc will soon make his way back into His Majesty’s inner circle. Little was seen this month of the newly returned Captain Hans Hoffman except a private visit, without his wife, to his club, Bothwell’s.

A Romantic Interlude by Comtessa Yvonne De Villepin
Mdm d’Armagnac had a busy month. She was seen escorted two weeks in a row by Paris’ most notorious heartbreaker, Lord De’Ath. But it was not the docteur who would win the young widow’s heart. Instead, she has formed an attachment with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lord Nicolas Lyon. We expect to see much of her at court in the future.
Mlle Bougiedure did not remain available for long after being cast asided by Lord De’Ath. Lord Huillaume has taken an interest in the sister of his fellow Grand Duc and royal minister. We wish the young lady the best of fortune and hope that little Renné and Mireia will soon have a mother again.
Speaking of maternal duties, Lady Bougiedure will soon experience the joys of motherhood, though her advancing pregnancy did not prevent her from attending the theater and the Steeplechase with her husband.
Also attending the theater and the Steeplechase with her husband was Lady Balls.
Susanna Hoffman spent a week in a carriage with her husband and child but the situation can hardly be called romantic. Aside from the bumpy ride returning from Burgundy, her husband ignored her for the month of October.

Limelight
The Ball’s players returned to a more traditional dramatic performance in October with their presentation of Left Bank Story, a translation of an English tragedy from the 16th Century. The biggest drama was in the sudden withdrawal by Mlle. Bougiedure from what would have been her premiere performance in the theatre. Lord Balls certainly must have scrambled to prepare a replacement in the final hour but has done a most credible job. The dramatic performance of the actors was by no means lacking, although Gerard Bushell groused about a scarcity of attractive actresses.

In November, the Archduc’s Men will present a bawdy opera, The Priestess of Joy, sponsored by the Brandenburgian Ambassador
