The Social Whirlwind by Sieur Matheus Mallette
The return of the Royal Court to Paris and the impending arrival of the armies from the Summer Campaign marks the end of the social doldrums that has so defined these recent months. There was an almost full slate of court events and Lord Legarde de Bearne roused himself from his mourning to properly attend.
Regrettably, the Grand Duc of Deols wit and grace all but left him during the month. He attended both Royal Balls without a female companion as is proper but it did him no favors in his attempt to gain the King’s inner circle.
The elevation of Lord De’Ath to the Baron de Ploërmel was marked by controversy as his companion, Brigette Bougiedure, saw fit to critique the morality of those in attendance. Fortunately, she stopped short of turning her zealous tongue on their Majesties. Things for the new Baron went from bad to worse on the dance floor as demonstrated that he is possessed of three left feet.
The celebration that Lord De’ath held at the Fleur-de-Lys was a much greater success if somewhat lightly attended. Lord and Lady Balls were seen attending on the docteur. Mdm d’Armagnac seems somewhat distracted during the celebration and did not provide any accustomed distraction.
The Government meetings were an absolute bore that Lord Legarde de Bearne was unable to alleviate. I find myself longing for the return to Paris of Lord Bougiedure.

A Romantic Interlude by Comtessa Yvonne De Villepin
Word has reached this writer that several ladies have been refreshing their wardrobes, amongst other things, in anticipation of their gentlemen returning from the front. Lady Bougiedure was seen in the most exclusive shops. Mdm Hoffman has been busy arranging the upcoming christening of her son. Mlle. Barthet stocked up on trout and radishes from the Foire de St Laurent.
Lord and Lady Balls appear to be on the outs again despite attending Lord De’Ath’s party at Fleur-de-Lys at the end on month.
Mlle. Bougiedure project to rehabilitate Docteur De’Ath continues apace.
Finally, Mdm D’Armagnac was rumored to be making discrete inquiries about certain gentlemen. Could the widow be considering returning to the marital state?

Financial News by Comte de Money
Fortune continues to shine on the ventures of the Controller-General of Finance. Two expeditions have returned generous profits and investments in financial instruments in the Spring are ripe to be harvested. Investments in Chinese porcelains and Burgundian wine have both made handsome returns this quarter. Investments in the various transportation companies based out of Paris less so.
The Controller General of Finances has announced the departure of an expedition to The Indies at the beginning of September Anno Domini Sixteen Hundred Thirty-Five. All subjects of His Majesty, Louis XIII, King of France and Navarre, are encouraged to invest in this venture. Gentlemen wishing to seek a foreign adventure are welcome to join the expedition.

Reports from the Front by General Georges Boulle (rtd.)
Peace descends (mostly) upon the frontiers as the Summer Campaign draws to a close.
Flanders Frontier
The Second Army saw success throughout their formation against Spanish Forces along the border with the Netherlands. The 1st Division saw the greatest success by crushing the enemy, led by the infantry regiments of the 1st Brigade. The Anjou Dragoons were equally successful in driving off the Spanish Cavalry but is liable to be considered a cursed regiment as they lost a second commander in as many months. Despite this success or perhaps because of it, the Minister of Foreign Affairs has decided on a more belligerent stance for the Fall.
Lorraine Frontier
Lord Bougiedure shows that he is truly a cavalryman at heart as he leads the King’s Cuirassier in a skirmish that sent the Habsburgian forces in Lorraine scurrying back to their side of the frontier. He is recognized with a mention in lieu of promotion and a little bit of loot. Oh, and the King will be hanging another Croix de la Cite on him for bringing peace to the province.
Savoy Frontier
Aggressive patrolling by the Savoy Frontier Regiment draws a reaction from the Milanese. The front will be on the defensive.
Spanish Frontier
The less said about the Commander of the First Army on the Spanish Frontier the better. Again, we were treated to a demonstration of the stalwart courage of the French infantry as the regiments of the 1st Division seized redoubt after redoubt from the Spanish defending the Castillo de Loarre. Even the Cavalry Brigade got involved by diverting the attention of the relief force away from the defenders, although the sacrifice of the Crown Prince’s Cuirassiers will undoubtedly draw a board of inquiry. There was plenty of loot to go around with both Lieutenant Hoffman and Subaltern Gauthier gather respectful amounts. It may all have been for naught as the Army Commander lost his nerve to an unseen enemy and withdrew his forces from the Castillo and back to the safety of France.
Next month:
Flanders Frontier HL 4 Raiding Field Ops
Lorraine Frontier HL 1 Peace Garrison
Savoy Frontier HL 3 Alert Defense
Spanish Frontier HL 1 Peace Garrison
