The Racing Form by Lancelot Lémieux
The first week of April saw the premiere event of the racing season, the Paris Derby! Black Rose and Silver Kitten were fastest out of the gate but were both overcome by Sea Fury coming out of the Club. Sea Fury maintained his lead through the backstretch closely followed by Silver Kitten and Black Rose but it was Lady Arabelle who made up the most ground pulling ahead of the pack as they went into the Far Turn. Coming into the Home Stretch, Black Rose lost the lead to Lady Arabella and Silver Kitten and it was the Grand Duc de Deols’ horse who crossed the finish line leading by only a nose!
Results Win – Silver Kitten Place – Lady Arabella Show – Black Rose 4th – Sea Fury 5th – Morning Blossom 6th (tie) – Silvermane 6th (tie) – Big Brown 8th – Wilting Thistle 9th – Athena 10th – Five Livres 11th – The Belle of Languedoc 12th – Sir Coco 13th – Wildflame 14th – La Grand Rue

The Social Whirlwind by Sieur Matheus Mallette
April was an exciting month replete with social engagements and intrigue. Lord Bougiedure was much in the presence of the King the entire month, seemingly to have replaced the Duc de Vendome as a royal favorite
The Paris Debry in the first week of April was heavily attended. Lord Huillame de Bearne was seen sharing an owner’s box with Lord Bougiedure despite the former having entered two horses in the Derby himself, while Lord Balls played host to Sieur Bastion. The King, upset by the poor performance of Wildflame, was in a foul mood and refused to leave his box. The other royals, however, were eager to make themselves scarce and the Queen visited the newly wed Bougiedures while the Crown Prince slaked his thirst at the expense of Lord Balls.
The royal palace of the Tuileries was the site of two royal balls and a reception for Lord Paolo Spinola, Marquis of Los Balbases, the Spanish envoy. Lord and Lady Bougiedure were exceptionally witty at both balls while Lord Huillame de Bearne was the undisputed master of the dance. During the envoy’s reception, The Queen was able to score points in her eternal struggle against the Cardinal, assisted by the most charming Lady Huillame de Bearne. Lord Bougiedure was elevated to Comte de Guyenne and Viscomte de Montbard while Lord Huillame de Bearne was elevated to Comte de Bearne and awarded a Barony in Provence. The King was so impressed with the Grand Duc de Chevreuse’s plans for increasing the royal treasury that he awarded 900L to his Controller General of Finance.
The Baron de Torcy and his wife attended the final ball of the month and his etiquette and dancing proficiency were about as deplorable as one would expect of a shopkeeper elevated to the nobility. Perhaps Lord Balls should spend less time at his theater and more at Madame Duschene’s.
For the less well titled, Lieutenant Hoffman and his wife held a small dinner party at their new residence in Monmarte during the third week of April. Mdm d’Armagnac was the center of attention for the Dragoon officers in attendance. Little else of note happened.
Happily, Mdm d’Armagnac’s return from her one-week stay in the Bastille was marked with excessive carousing at her new club, Hunter’s, in the second and fourth weeks of the month. Our scandal magnet was seen propositioning club patrons in the second week and overestimating her gambling skills in the fourth week.

A Romantic Interlude by Comtessa Yvonne De Villepin
Gentle Readers! We shall soon hear the pitter-pat of small feet again as it is clearly evident that both Lady Huillame de Bearne and Mdm Hoffman are bearing bundles of joy for their respective husbands! One can only hope that the Bougiedures and Balls will be similarly blessed ere long.
Mlle Bougiedure is seeming to have a positive impact on the behavior of Docteur De’ath. For the second month in a row, Sieur Bastion was seen inside a church AND contributing generously to the collection plate! This perhaps explains why the good docteur decided to practice his skills to the benefit of the Duc de Richelieu in the second half of the month.
I must once again point out the fault of a life devoted to hedonistic pleasures to Mdm d’Armagnac. The widow seems determined to make her way without the benefit of an establishment but I can’t help but feel that she is domed to so great injury, either to her person or her reputation.

Reports from the Front by General Georges Boulle (rtd.)
The Spanish and their Habsburg allies continue to push along multiple fronts. Fortunately, hostilities haven’t increased over the month. A happy situation that cannot be expected to continue as the Summer approaches.
Flanders Frontier
More blundering by the Flanders Frontier Regiment fails to find the Spanish. At least there weren’t an casualties.
Lorraine Frontier
The Lorraine Frontier Brigade took to the field against the Habsburg forces but was driven from the field by superior generalship despite the arrival of the Crown Prince’s Cuirassiers. The brigade commander was killed removing the necessity of a courts-martial for incompetence. The Lorraine Frontier Regiment fought bravely to allow an orderly withdrawal to the fortifications of Toul. Private Aloys Gauthier was wounded during the rear guard action. He is mentioned in dispatches and gained some loot abandoned, one would suspect, by the retreating Cuirassiers.
Savoy Frontier
In contrast, the Savoy Brigadier is to be lauded for his clever employment of his two regiments in crushing the Milanese forces, sending them scurrying like so many rats across the Savoyard. The brigade commander and Gascon Regiment Commander are breveted to the next rank for their gallantry. Sadly, the frontier regiment will be looking for a new commander as their former one caught a Milanese musket round during the pursuit of the routed enemy.
Spanish Frontier
Another inconclusive result from the Spanish Frontier Division. One would think that a Marshal de Chef could make better use of the Royal North Highlands Brigade and the Queen’s Own Carabineers.
Next month:
Flanders Frontier HL 3 Alert Field
Lorraine Frontier HL 4 Raiding Defense
Savoy Frontier HL 3 Alert Field
Spanish Frontier HL 7 Incursion Field
