The Racing Form by Lancelot Lémieux
The St. Denis Stakes, held in the fourth week of February, turned into a two-horse race between Dusty Dutchman and More Diamonds. The Comte de Normandy’s horse led the race into the far turn but the favorite was able to gain a better angle through the bend and a final burst of speed allowed Dusty Dutchman to cross the finish a half horse-length in front of the second horse. The remaining field, led by The Belle of Languedoc, were an embarrassing three horse-lengths behind the leaders.
Results Win – Dusty Dutchman Place – More Diamonds Show – The Belle of Languedoc 4th – Silver Kitten 5th – Plump Lady 6th – Roadapple

The Social Whirlwind by Sieur Matheus Mallette
February 1635 was Lord Legarde de Bearne’s month. The Duc de Deols began the second week of the month by delivering an astounding speech outlining his plans for the upcoming year. The ministers gave a standing ovation to the Minister of State, led by the cheers of Lady de Bearne and rather inexplicably Mlle leBeau in the gallery. This was followed up at the Royal Ball for Charles I of England and Queen Louisa where the newly elevated Duc was most masterful on the dance floor.
Lord Bougiedure upon whom the King bestowed the title and estate of Baron de Camambert was uncharacteristically dull during the Royal Ball being neither especially witty nor displaying exceptional skill in the dance. The King, however, seemed to be most pleased with Lord Bougiedure after the private audience between the two.
Lord Balls held a stag party for Hans Hoffman at Bothwell’s in the second week of the month but the guest of honor was mysteriously absent. He made the best of the opportunity, however, by carousing with Sieur Bastion.
The Royal Family attended the St Denis Stakes, but only the Crown Prince decided to venture from the Royal Ball, determined to carouse with the Comte de Normandy. Lord Bougiedure and his fiancé Mlle leBeau were seen in the Owner’s Box of Lord and Lady Legarde de Bearne. In the Pavilion, Lord Balls escorted his wife. Elsewhere, the widow d’Armagnac got very drunk and flirted outrageously with anything in breeches.
Finally, one must wonder what the Blue Gables is serving. Jean d’Eau, newly arrived in Paris, spent the entire month in that august establishment. Mdm d’Armagnac spent only two weeks at the Blue Gables but managed to drink nearly as much as Mssr d’Eau did in four.

A Romantic Interlude by Comtessa Yvonne De Villepin
Gentle Reader, I must confess myself much indisposed at the poor plight of Susanna Lahey! On the brink of matrimony her betrothed disappears without a trace! It is better, I suppose, than to be left at the altar but only just. I am undecided at this point on whether to hope that nothing horrible has happened to Hans Hoffman and hoping that something has!
As shocking as the disappearance of Hans Hoffman is, I find myself much more surprised at the sudden attachment of Brigette Bougiedure to Paris’ most notorious cad, Sieur Bastion! The two were seen, properly chaperoned of course, riding in the docteur’s most modest conveyance and taking in the scenes around town. But I shall set aside my most justified prejudices and hope that the noted piety of Mlle Bougiedure shall inspire Sieur Bastion to make himself over to a proper gentleman.
Speaking of propriety, perhaps someone could have a word with Jean d’Eau that life in our fair city is much more pleasant with a companion at your side.
Finally, I would suggest to Mssr Aloys Gauthier that while a quite evening at home is occasionally enjoyable, Iuette Barthet would much prefer to be escorted around the town.
