The Court Report by Nicolas Chorier
If there was ever an open and shut case before the Court of Paris, it would have been the charge of incitement to murder levelled against Sieur Bastion Anton De’Ath. A religious debate that devolved into hyperbole and heated accusations presented to sacred and secular authorities. But late last month, it appeared that cooler heads would prevail as the two antagonist met to sort their differences and a letter from a prominent widow to the Minister of Justice put a comical turn to the precipitating event. All seemed in place for a speedy dismissal.
Affairs took a less than favorable turn when the court was convened. The failure of the accuser to appear before the court would normally be a difficult thing for the prosecutor to justify but the judge accepted the plea of religious obligation without comment. Both advocates performed in a serviceable manner with Gaillart le Saussier giving his usual enthusiastic if bombastic orations. The judge, however, seemed bored by the proceedings and gave his guilty verdict in near record time.
Mssr Phelipot de Croiseus, the prosecuting advocate, was so shocked that Mssr le Saussier, armed with a testimonial from the Grand Duc de Chevreuse vouching for the good character of Sieur Bastion, was able to get the sentence reduced from banishment to the frontier down to a simple, if expensive, fine. The legal profession will be reeling with the implication of this decision for months to come.

The Racing Form by Lancelot Lémieux
An exciting, if lightly attended, opening to the racing season with the running of the Futurity. The winning horse, Ever So Clever, was fastest out of the starting gate and never looked back, despite late bursts of speed from the favorite, Morning Blossom.
His Majesty was much discommoded by the poor showing of Wildflame especially after the heated bidding over the horse between Himself and Cardinal Richelieu.
Results Win - Ever So Clever Place - Morning Blossom Show - Ten of Spades 4th - Sea Fury 5th (tie) - Wildflame 5th (tie) - White Stockings

The Social Whirlwind by Sieur Matheus Mallette
With the Royal Court returned to Paris in the first week of January, life in Paris has returned to a much more normal state. The arrival of so many of our city’s luminaries ensures plenty of social gristle to chew upon, although the Bonnets have decided to extend their absence perhaps to give the Viscomty de Tercis a proper heir.
The second week of January saw Their Majesties hosting Johan Axelsson Oxenstierna af Södermöre, son of the Lord High Chancellor of Sweden. The young nobleman was charmed by the ladies of the court especially Lady Legarde de Bearne and Mlle leBeau, but it was Lord Bougiedure, much to my distress, who shone brightest. Regrettably, Their Majesties departed early leaving the Minister of State to entertain the envoy with the able assistance of the Controller-General of Finance.
Those of less exalted station were invited to the dinner party to celebrate the engagement late last month of Hans Hoffman and Susanne Lahey. Mdm d’Armagnac and Aloys Gauthier were in attendance but the absence of Father Ymbert and Sieur Bastion, who was spending the evening at Bothwell’s in the company of his advocate, ensured that the event would be less dramatic than Lieutenant Hoffman’s previous dinner party.
The running of the Futurity in the third week gave Lord Bougiedure and Lord Legarde de Bearne the opportunity to share time with their respective ladies. There was no shortage of fine champagne flowing in the owner’s box but the Crown Prince was mysteriously absent. In the Pavilion, Lord Balls was seen drowning his sorrows over his lost bet in the company of Lieutenant Hoffman.
The Parlement of Paris closed the month. It is rumored that the Crown Prince intended to expose the Queen and only the timely intervention of Lord Legarde de Bearne, commanding the detachment on guard at the Louvre Palace, prevented Her Majesty’s embarrassment.

The Death of Marlowe
Lord Balls and the Ball’s Men have another success on their hands. The Death of Marlowe, while not as triumphant as the Baron’s previous piece, was very entertaining. I am not normally diverted by mysteries but tale of Jacque Clousseau’s investigation into the premature death of Kit Marlowe was quite intriguing. It is nice to see the Baron de Torcy moving beyond the bawdy.
