I'm aware that you have recently received representations from a certain Ymbert Montgomery, a minor churchman of the Hugeunot 'faith', seeking to waste your most valuable time through exagerated claims of self perceived threats to his personal safety.
Such claims are, of course, wildly distorted and simply confirm my own professional diagnosis that the fellow is quite mad, this latest outburst of his I believe is directly linked to what the common folk refer to as the 'Spanish Disease' but what we medical professionals recognise as Syphilis. Madness is one of the symptoms of this affliction, for which there is no known cure, and give proof to past misdemeanours not regarded by true Christians as befitting for those that espouse the virtues of faith and servitude to the Almighty.
As you are doubtless aware I am Paris leading medical physician, providing care and administrations to a wide range of patients ranging from the most lowly and needy within society through to the higher echelons of the nobility. Bishops, Arch Dukes, Grand Dukes, Lords etc you name them I've been on hand to assist them where needed. Indeed, recognition of my sterling achievements in the medical field brought me to the attention of His Majesty who sought to reward my services by an elevation to the rank of Chevalier of France.
I have to say ever since the arrival in Paris of this Montgomery fellow I've heard countless talk by patients about him, unsubstantiated as they may currently be I can't help but think of that old adeage 'No smoke without fire'! However, what I can bring as proof is the following and it is a direct result of these that I would ask you to open an immediate investigation into the dealings, operations and background of this individual. I ask you also to give a moments thought to what kind of person it is that opts to seek prosecution of not just a Chevalier, not just Paris's Premier Physician, but one who further serves His Majesty and Your Excellency as Royal Executioner.
Now, to the proof.....I recently attended a house party, hosted by the most pious and worthy Lieut. Hans Hoffman. At this party was also present Montgomery, one may think a most unusual venue at which to find a self proclaimed man of faith, and during my time there Montgomery sought to engage me in conversation about the Hugeunot teachings, trying to twist and lure me away from the comforting embrace of the true Mother Church. I found it strange that he sought to continually repeat the same woeful diatribe after I, a mere layman of the Catholic faith, had robustly and elequently torn to shreds such pathetic examples as he could offer as to why he felt his was the path to follow. It seemed I was never going to get rid of the fellow, he kept following me around and woffling on and on to the point that when it was clear he was intending to follow me when I went to use the ablutions I could take no more! "Away with you rogue", I cried out "Leave a man in peace" at which point he stumbled into me and we both tumbled to the floor.
Glad to be finally rid of the chap, I thought little more of it and was finally most relieved to see that he left the party shortly afterwards. It was only later that I discovered my purse had gone missing, it contained a significant sum of livres that I'd received from my professional duties. I knew I had it when I came to the party, having bought several bottles en route for Lieut Hoffman's table and it had subsequently disappeared during the party. Then, it came to me....the stumbling incident....hadn't I only a few months earlier, in my role as Royal Executioner, removed the head of that rogue from Gascony who'd been leader of a gang of petty thieves and robbers who used to target marketplaces....one of thier known tactics being to stumble into a victim and then deftly removing his / her purse during the ensuing confusion! So, that was it Montgomery had stolen my purse and, by doing so, revealed one of his hitherto unknown traits that he has kept hidden from us all but what I believe lays clear now, a shady past linked to crime!
Respecting Lieut Hoffman, and wishing to bring no fuss or commotion to him or his good lady, I kept silent on the theft but promising to myself that, as a loyal employee of the Public Safety Ministry, and a law abiding and devout citizen, I'd keep a close eye on Montgomery and seek to expose him in the near future once I'd been able to secure proof of his wrongdoings. As Your Excellency well knows the path of crime is an ascending one, starting with petty crimes but rising to far greater ones, it was only me this time, the victim of theft, but next time...who knows....a rogue / villain who dares to rob a Chevalier of France may soon think nothing of striking at a Baron, a Duc and Lord or...and I hate to suggest but...a Commissioner too?!!
I also saw the way Montgomery sought to ingratiate himself with Lieut Hoffman and his good lady, filling their heads with his Hugeunot ramblings. I have to say his words to the couple were of the same woeful inadequate ones as those he tried with me and Lieut Hoffman, a staunch and pious Catholic believer, was equally adept at destroying his tame rhetoric. Montgomery went off to secure 2 fresh drinks for his hosts and I couldn't help but observe what appeard to be the dying remnants of 'a fizzing and bubbling' on the surface of each of the wines when he handed them over. Momentary perhaps, almost invisible to the eye of one unskilled in the medicine field, but to me, Paris Premier Physician as clear as a moonlit sky!
Again, having no actually proof, I said nowt but stood by to observe any visible effects upon our hosts. What I observed was stunning, in a matter of minutes Lieut Hoffman appeared to lose his previous exemplary oratory skills in demolishing Montgomery's pitiful pleadings on behalf of Hugeunism and, instead, just stood there nodding in agreement at everything, repeated once again, that Montgomery came out with! I even saw him glibly sign a letter that Montgomery produced signing him and Susanna up as members of his parish! Not being content at having robbed me he was now drugging our hosts and getting them to abandon their Catholic faith and adopt his!! Shocking, Your Excellency, shocking and, like me, I very much suspect you are thinking of who will be his next victim?!
It is, with examples such as the above, I call upon you to dismiss any claims made by Montgomery against me. I realise I have somehow alerted him to my awareness of his true nature and intentions here in Paris so he is desperately seeking a way to have rid of me so he can continue his nefarious pursuits. Fortunately you and I are made of sterner stuff, alert intelligent people who can recognise a rogue when we see one and who can act to stop them!
Once his laughable protestations have been deposited in the bin I then ask you to have an arrest warrant drawn up in the name of Ymbert* Montgomery upon the grounds of 'Theft' from a Chevalier of France and 'Treason'....Treason, I hear you ask....well, yes...you see by drugging Lieut Hoffman he was directly affecting one of His Majesty's Officers, thus preventing him from properly performing his duties to the Crown and, by thus doing, denying King & Country. I'll admit to being no legal man but it looks pretty clear to me. However, if it isn't to you on some technicality or other, then simply replace the charge with a more fitting one but one that carries the most severe of punishments in the case of guilt proven.
