The Greasy Pole with Sieur Matheus Mallette
The first week of September saw the arrival at the Louvre of the Spanish Prime Minister Gasper de Guzmán, Count-Duke of Olivares invited at the urging of her Majesty, Queen Anne. The reception did not go as well as she might have hoped. The Cardinal was in the King’s ear all evening, sowing discontent toward the envoy from the country that has so discommoded our southern border
It seems to this writer that a misanthropic malaise has descended upon Paris. One expects that with the conclusion of the Summer Campaign, friendships would be renewed and social calls would blossom like tulips in April. It seems, however, that many of Paris’ notables prefer a hermetic existence. Only Lord Bougiedure and de L'Hopital were seen carousing together at the Royal Ball.
Speaking of Lord Bougiedure, one tires of writing about his wit and eloquence and this month was no exception. Lord Legarde de Bearne appeared ready to give the Duc de Chevreuse a run for his money by opening the month’s government meetings in superlative style. He forgot, however, that the race goes not to the swiftest but the competitor with the greatest stamina for his deportment seemed to flag as the month went on.
Amongst the working professionals, Paris’ most exceptional medical man cured the Comte de Normandy’s gout. Sieur Bastion was expecting the Comte’s patronage but was thwarted by the Comte’s notorious parsimony, a condition that even the good doctor’s skill is unlikely to cure.
Special mention to Lord Bonnet’s attempt to provoke a member of the Cardinal’s Guard into duel that was only circumvented by the untimely intervention, in my opinion, of the Viscomtessa de Tercis whose soothing tones turned to two belligerents into her lapdogs.
I save the juiciest gossip for the last. It seems that the Duc of Gévaudan has been trying to establish himself as the most refractory noble in all of Paris! After being newly appointed as Secretary of State, he skipped out on the reception for the Spanish Prime Minister. His application for the Lieutenant-Captaincy of the Crown Prince Cuirassiers was mysteriously denied. Then he moved out of the mansion in Ile de Cite that he had rented only two months ago! Finally, he arrived with Mlle Chabert at the Royal Ball…in a rented highway coach!
I am hoping that this means the good Duc will provide me entertainment for months to come.
