Lieutenant Hoffman.
Sir.
Your impudent letter is so full of misconceptions and falsehoods I'm not quite sure where to start. I think I shall address the most egregious errors and leave you to figure out the rest slowly on your own.
Firstly, merely observing an obvious truth is hardly insulting a lady. I can see why your friend's memory is somewhat skewed however. He was rather in his cups that day.
Secondly, despite what you seem to think, dueling is in fact recognised as the right way to settle matters of honour among gentlemen, regardless of whether they have chosen to serve His Majesty in the army or not. I assume your friend accepts that, hence the challenge. I can understand why one of your birth might be confused. Perhaps Madame Duschene could stop you embarrassing yourself in future?
Finally, if you could pass this message on. I do not care which Ministers, doctors or ladies of the night request me to step down. I serve my country and I remain a member of the Dragoon Guards and damn anyone who says otherwise to hell.
Captain Harloynus Ardouin, 2nd Squadron Commander, Dragoon Guards
OOC: The Captain refuses to resign his position.

Lord l'Hopital
Sorry old chap. No can do I'm afraid; busy busy. Hope it's a good do though and do bear me in mind for the future.
Yours,
Crown Prince Gaston de Bourbon, Duc d'Orleans
OOC: The Crown Prince will not be at the party.
