My dear friend Maurice,
Word is spreading around Paris of your elevation to the nobility and that you have been made Duc of Gevaudan, indeed from henceforth you are to be known as Lord Maurice de L'Hopital.
Allow me to be the first to congratulate you upon your title as well as to commiserate you for the loss of your father. The loss of a parent is a heavy one to face, I should know as my own father passed away a few months ago but what did he bequeath me? A title? An estate? No, by doing so, he deprived me of a much needed monthly allowance! I always said you were France's finest soldier, a hero always keen to take on the enemy, almost reckless in your bravery. Our joint efforts to rescue the late, lamented, Fr Chatten, while others stood idly by, stands as testament to your character, thus it is fitting that you should now assume the title of Duc.
Following your own recent capture it was I who led the call for your own liberation, calling upon those of greater financial means than my own to step forward but offering to co-ordinate the rescue from Paris while also offering free medical care to the Spanish Officer who was your captor.
Splendid news that my efforts paid off and the ransom monies were forthcoming, allowing you to return to us in Paris. Few suspected, however, that your return would be marked in such grief tinted splendor!
I've heard scurrilous ill informed whispers enquiring as to how your elevation came about but I dismiss such as mere jealousy from others less fortunate and, spoken in haste, they were clearly incorrect. You have His Majesty blessing and that's more than good enough for me.
Are you thinking of holding a joint wake / celebratory party? If so, I'd be delighted to attend and that would allow me the opportunity to introduce you to my new lady friend, the delightful Mademoiselle Chabert, who I know will be absolutely thrilled to meet such a renowned hero.
Sincere wishes,
Docteur Bastian Anton De'Ath
Premier (and popular) Physician to the people of Paris
Chevalier of France
His Majesty's Royal Executioner
Family Docteur to, amongst others, Archduke Leopold and the Bishop of Narbonne
