This is meant for discussion, hence the lack of new rules so far. (I'll only bother with a poll if people seem split)
At the moment, the situation, as I'm sure you've all noticed, is that it's become increasingly easy to gain SLs. The main reason for that is that the house rules have added an increasing number of ways to get SP! There's several options here.
Keep as is. I've put this first to highlight the fact it's fine as an option. This is only really an issue if people are finding the game too unchallenging. If people are fine with the rate of progression, then I don't actually have an issue with how things are.
Change the calculation. This would be reasonably straightforward. So (as an example) it needs 3xSL to keep your current level or 5 x SL to raise a SL.
Half any positive SP carried over. This is elegant and doesn't make it more likely that people will drop or make the penalty for negative SP more severe.
Let me know what you think. (There's separate more complicated stuff with the extreme high SL people so that'll have its own thread).

In any game of EnGarde! I find SL rise to about SL 9 is possible, with a little work, month by month.
Then cash can become short, or SP sources insufficient, or perhaps a combination. Seeking cash at the front can the lead to death... or enough cash to continue. Or just survival.
Making the transition to the middling SL ranks and higher military ranks has never been easy for me... maybe I have not played enough!
In Liminal I have found some combination of events give enough of a boost in SP that I can rise in SL for several months. But these events can be scarce, leading to stagnation. The switch from Captain of the Guard to Brigadier kinda stimied my last character's advancement .. well with some sad events in his life. Plenty of RP fodder though.
In more standard games I have spent months doing virtually nothing... despite more players! Partially my own fault of course.
If you make advancement too difficult with the friendly co-operate players you have, then in times of less co-operation it could be impossible?

Jim makes some sound points and I find my characters - ok they (for some reason!) always tend to be somewhat of a similar nature, a tad mentally unstable - also mirror the experiences he details (albeit Jim's are more rational!). I'd prefer it to stay as it is re SL advancement, especially as we're well into this game and there are already several prominent characters (damn them!) and if the rules on SL changes I fear the rest of us will never catch up with them and....and...doh...I so need to be MoS!
