To: His most Christian Majesty, King Louis XIII
Ruler of France
Sire,
I had just arrived home, from dealing with a particularly tricky case of genital warts, when I received news of your decision to grant me the title of Chevalier!
May I just say, Your Majesty, how such public recognition is most welcomed not for myself, of course, but in the interests of medicine, and fully demonstrates your commitment to advancement in this most important field of science. The people of Paris, quite rightly, cheer and welcome our returning military heroes from the various fronts of conflict but, for some time now, one cannot help having overheard those same people clamoring for recognition of individuals they consider as champions at a more local level. Modesty embarrasses me, at a personal level, from overtly celebrating my elevation to the nobility however I think it only right that I do so in a professional capacity in tribute to my fellow physicians which is why I shall be hosting a party - the 'Bravo for Bastian Party' - at my club next month and I'd like to extend to Your Majesty a personal invite to join me, if you find yourself free at such time.
I feel the granting to me of this honour heralds the beginning of a 'Golden Era' for France alongside the clear message of the value that those of us of a non military profession contribute towards the growth of the realm. Indeed, I was further heartened to learn of the appointment of my dear friend, Monsieur Auguste Balls, as Royal Chemist. A fine man that Balls, Sire, one of the best and I'm sure that he will prove to be of a most beneficial addition in the post. I have to admit though I was more than a little disappointed not to also be endorsed as the Commissioner for Public Health, a role to which I am more than suited, even more so now being a Chevalier, and it may be that Your Majesty was not fully alerted as to my application, what with all the focus, quite naturally, being upon my ennobling. I'm not sure who has been appointed but if this proves to be a 'paperwork' error I'm sure it can be rectified and I stand on hand to assume the post of Public Health Commissioner at Your Majesty's notice.
Still, once again, bless you for the Chevalier award, I look forward to meeting you at the Palace and to a growing relationship between us, me as Your Majesty's most loyal and obedient servant, over the coming months and years. I have some wonderful ideas towards the promotion of medicine throughout the realm which I am sure, once you have heard the plans detailed, you'll be happy and keen to adopt. I see my focus now of raising Your Majesty's reputation across Europe and the known world as the Champion of Medicine through the support and endorsements you are able to make and, well, if that also raises me further as a consequence I shall accept any future awards (Baron / Viscomte etc) merely as proof of Your Majesty's benevolence.
Your most devoted and loyal servant,
Docteur Bastian Anton De'Ath
Premier physician to the people of Paris
(Soon to be formally....Chevalier of France!!)
P.S On a separate matter, Sire, both I and Lieut Maurice L'Hopital are organizing a rescue mission for the unfortunate Fr Chatten but, sadly, there has been a lamentable response from some of the realm's leading nobles! Yes, I know, unbelievable that decorated heroes are not coming to the fore to join the mission and the people are beginning to voice their displeasure in the streets. Perhaps Your Majesty could add weight to the mission by publicly endorsing it and calling upon others to participate as, for sure, His Most Holy Father, Pope Urban VIII, will be grateful to learn of the steps being taken to save a clergyman and, any glory and celebration of such success will be given fully to you.
P.P.S Re the above I had proposed Lord Hulluame Lagarde de Bearne, Fr. Chatten's Regimental Commander, a decorated war hero and senior noble, as Rescue Mission Leader. His expertise and daring, across the oceans there in Africa, all those many miles away from Paris, would surely ensure success but he has yet to respond to me but with a word from Your Majesty.......
P.P.P.S On a final point may I just say what an honour it would further be to serve as Your Majesty's personal physician in the future. I am compiling a series of case notes to strengthen a future application and these are available for Your Majesty's perusal at anytime.
