My fine three friends, the cream of Parisian society,
How happy I have been to observe your respective steady climb upwards upon the ladder of social success, how I've been comforted as you've acquired numerous titles, clapped in pure joy as yet another grand estate is added to the growing land and property portfolios you own and how the inspiration you each project to the general populace is most commendable and gives hope to one and all.
Of course many have sought to emulate such success, my good self being amongst that number, and I am proud to say that an opportunity has, at last, arisen for the name of De'Ath to join the ranks of the minor nobility. Nothing of the prestige each of you have attained, nothing to rival your positions but some scope to swell France's ennobled few and what better example could there be than a medical man, Paris's Premier Physician, no less, me Bastian Anton De'Ath!
The small difficulty in such a splendid proposal is His Majesty's busy workload and the many representations and approaches he must receive from others also seeking to elevate their status, how is His Majesty expected to know every case? Well, I would proffer, through the kind words of those who are in positions of greatness and have the ear of His Majesty it would surely only take, say, 3 of such sound individuals to explain to the King how I, Docteur De'Ath, am head and shoulders above the others up for consideration and, thus, my elevation to Chevalier ought to be a 'shoe-in', as they say.
Now each of you have secured glory for King and Country on the battlefield, fighting off the foe and sending the enemy away in retreat, all very splendid and all that, as I've already made clear I've been at the forefront of the masses cheering you all the way while raising numerous glasses in toast to your brave endeavors. However, back here in Paris I have been fighting my own war against a far different enemy, but one just as deadly!! Yes, disease your Graces, the invisible enemy that strikes so many of our fellow countrymen down and the reward for doing so is scant in comparison to that of a military man. One can imagine the nerve needed to face off against a raging Spaniard or Englishman leveling the barrel of cannon towards you BUT....BUT.....picture too the mottled old backside of an octogenarian bishop, readying itself for a discharge of a far putrid kind!!
I think you'll agree the selfless sacrifices that I make on behalf of the advancement of medicine, seeking the cures to many ailments and, ultimately, a disease free Paris stand me in a fitting position to be recognised in other ways than a meagre physician's fee. That is why I am respectfully calling upon our strong bonds of friendship to ask if you will each support me in securing both a Chevalier elevation and the post of Commissioner for Public Health. Fine men of your stature I would suspect could find opportunity to have a word in each of the King's ears thus totaling 6 separate mentions of my name and such must surely make clear to His Majesty my suitability.
Now, of course, I'd be more than indebted to such friends that would do me the honour and favour, indebted for life no less. If any of such friends ever needed the immediate services of a skilled physician, Paris's best for sure, then I'd be right there, no matter the hour or the crisis. Furthermore with a growing reputation of my own I'd also be there with influence and favours of my own to support you in future endeavors.
I await your confirmation and look forward to joining you at Royal Balls and Ambassadors visits and important things like these.
Your sincere and loyal friend,,
Docteur Bastian Anton De'Ath
