As the barely acknowledged son of a minor Provencal noble Jorge had few choices in life. His mother dying in childbirth had left him an orphan at the mercy of the local convent and as he got older the nearest monastery at Montmajour. An indifferent cellarer and gardener Jorge found his home in the library and scriptorium. Proving himself to be an engaged (if not particularly spectacular) scholar he became assistant librarian. After several years Jorge was ordained a priest in the Benedictine order. As the years passed he became aware of the new Congregation of Saint Maur, a scholarly branch of the Benedictine order. Fascinated by their scholastic interests Jorge visited the order but found their devotion to a strict monastic regime not to his taste. He has chosen to travel to Paris where the greatest libraries in France are and to meet with the scholars of the time.
Jorge is not a streetwise man and knows nothing of Society outside the monastery. Travelling to Paris by public coach (a journey that took some weeks) he was regularly subject to jokes he didn’t understand but was clearly protected by the angel who looks after fools as he was not subject to attack or robbery.
