In the Medical Collegium
Dean: so, colleagues, what brings us here?
First voice: we heard a member of our college has accepted the post of King’s Executioner. How can he dare? Taking life is against our vows…
Second voice: nonetheless they are not patients, but condemned people… The vows don’t apply
First Voice: don’t they? So the vows are only when working, not about our style of life? We’re doctors all time, and we’re to care for life at any moment
Third voice: maybe his goal is to avoid the condemned more sufferance… He sure knows how to avoid unnecessary pain…
First voice: for the same reason, we could kill anyone suffering due to incurable illness, and that’s clearly against our vows.
Second voice: so what do you suggest? To condemn executions or to allow them to be done by people who can increase the sufferance due to lack of knowledge?
First voice: I don’t know, but I keep stating our vows don’t allow to voluntarily kill people. “Primum non nocere”
Second voice: again, dear colleague, this only applies to our medical practice…
Firs voice: so we can harm when not working? I don’t believe this to be the spirit of our profession…
Dean: you all give good reasons, despite contradictory ones… I’ll summon the elders of the collegium to discuss the fact…
