Man’s Voice: “Dammitohell! Dammitohell! Dammitohell!”
Woman’s Voice: “Henri, my husband, whatever is the matter?”
Man’s Voice: “I have just received news from Paris that makes me mad enough to chew nails!”
Woman’s Voice: “I can see that but surely in can’t be so bad as to necessitate the careless use of oaths. What would your father say if he heard such language coming from the mouth of his son and heir?”
Man’s Voice: [Sputtering] “Yes! I mean, No! Well, Maybe…I don’t want to offend my father but the news is so offensive it is not to be borne!”
Woman’s Voice: [Sighing] “What it is now?”
Man’s Voice: “What else? Outrageous fortune continues to pour upon my brother, Jacques, like rains in April. Undeservedly!”
Woman’s Voice: [Smiling] “Ah, Jacques, the son who was expelled from his father’s estate to make his own way in the world?”
Man’s Voice: “Yes! He brought shame to our family name and refused to do his duty to God by entering the church as our father insisted. His infernal luck in the Army accelerated his rise in Parisian society and has brought him into the possession of noble titles and lands. Now, after being elevated for giving a pretty speech before the King and is to be elevated again! He is only one step away from being on the same level as our father!”
Woman’s Voice: [Mockingly] “Yes, that must be a great concern to your father.”
Man’s Voice: “Viscomtes dying off left and right, leaving their titles and lands to eldest sons, and I am denied my birthright!”
Woman’s Voice: “So your father is conspiring with Jacques to keep a title away from you?”
Man’s Voice: “Father wouldn’t but I can certainly expect it of Jacques.”
Woman’s Voice: “Well, be of good cheer, my husband. While Jacques is nursing a broken heart by trying too hard to be seen with all the unattached women, and some of the attached as well if rumor is to be believed, of Paris you are secure in the love of a good woman who bears your child.”
Man’s Voice: “Did you not hear? At the Debutantes’ Ball that tart le Beau practically threw herself into Jacques arms when he asked to resume their courtship.”
Woman’s Voice: [Incredulous] “She did???”
Man’s Voice: “Yes.”
