First Voice: Madam has barely touched her supper. Is there aught amiss?
Second Voice: Oh, Kitty. I am despondent. I do not hunger for what chef has prepared.
First Voice: Shall I tell him to cook something else? A soufflé perhaps?
Second Voice: No, what I yearn for has a somewhat harder consistency.
First Voice: There are some two-day old baguettes that I was about to throw away.
Second Voice: Be not so obtuse, Kitty.
First Voice: …
Second: When my young man returned from the front, I had such high hopes. He escorted me to the Royal Ball and we were such the center of attention. I expected more social engagements with me on his arm. Then in the carriage on our way home, he announced that he was engaged the rest of the month on military and civil duties.
First Voice: He is a man of great responsibilities.
Second Voice: But what of his responsibilities to me? At least while he was at the front, I looked forward to the letters and gifts that he sent to me. Now, that he is back in Paris, he doesn’t feel the need to show similar attentions.
First Voice: At least he isn’t paying court to another woman.
Second Voice: This is worse, Kitty. If he were seeking companionship with another, my anger would be justified. But his other mistress is his duty to the King! How am I to support my ire against the King? [sobbing]
First Voice: There, there, Madam. I am sure that this month will be better.
