Because of Rhi taking on some of the news duties when she has time, we've been able to flesh this out a bit more.
Because it's early days, I hope nobody minds that the previous NPCs have been replaced by new ones!
Note that you can interact with these NPCs. In particular, Baroness Genevieve DuPoint and Celeste Ludenburg are both courtable mistresses. (And challenge Zacharie to a duel. Go on, it'll be fun!)
If there's any areas you think aren't covered let us know and we'll make a new NPC accordingly.
Here are the main writers for La Voix de Paris
Le Mole – The Social Whirlwind (General Gossip and the Parisian Social Scene)
Le Mole only arrived at La Voix de Paris a year ago and nobody knows his identity. Not even the editors; apparently every column is delivered in the dead of night on perfumed parchment. (Le Mole has very nice handwriting).
What is known is that Le Mole has contacts at every level of society, from the highest echelons of nobility to the humblest peasants. Always well informed, keeping secrets from Le Mole is not easy.
Comtess Yvonne De Villepin – A Romantic Interlude (Matters of the heart and other subjects related to the ladies of Paris)
The Comtess had something of a wild reputation in her younger days, breaking hearts left and right and being the subject of too many duels to count. Eventually she settled down with the then Minister of State, enjoying many happy years and bearing two children. Now a widow, she still takes a keen interest in romantic matters although she no longer actively partakes herself.
Rather worldly (and sometimes terrifyingly frank about the more physical parts of relationships) she is seen by many of the young ladies of Paris as something of a mother figure.
Field Marshal (rtd) Georges Boulle – Reports from the Front (Military Matters)
Now in his seventies, George still has strong opinions on the military, the indiscipline of young milksops and how the youth of today have no respect for tradition and you can't tell if they're boys or girls and also his legs hurt.
George is also a classic “rags to riches” story, having worked his way up the ranks to Field Marshal from a humble start as a Private in the Gascon Regiment. If he has a soft spot, it would be for those of similarly humble origins. On the other hand, it only barely manages to conceal his contempt for those born into privilege, especially if they buy their way into the officer ranks rather than working for it.
Bishop Henry Defour - An Ecumenical Matter (Church News)
A member of the Benedictine order, the good Bishop is highly regarded for his piety and benevolence. He never has a bad word to say about anyone, being unusually tolerant even towards Huguenots.
His detractors mutter that this comes less from saintliness and more from an incredibly naivety towards the reality of the temporal world. It's certainly true that the Bishop doesn't seem to recognise even the concept of corruption within the Church, beaming rosily at even the most egregious acts.
Chevalier Zacharie Grosjean – For Honour (Duelling News)
Also the Director of the Fencing Schools, Monsieur Grosjean has a reputation for being something of a fop. It's not entirely undeserved. Certainly, he shows a keen interest in poetry and his outrageous outfits frequently set the tone for the season's fashion trends. But only a foolish young man would mistake Zacahrie's foppishness for a lack of competence. And one who did would be dissuaded very quickly, at the point of a rapier blade.
Zacharie sees duelling as a high art form, often likening it to a game of chess. He respects flamboyance and skill, valuing it over simple victory. Turning up to your duel with a two handed sword is unlikely to impress him.
Gerard Bushell and Baroness Genevieve DuPoint – Limelight (Theatre productions)
La Voix de Paris is lucky enough to have two reviewers covering the dramatic arts. Naturally, the two despise each other.
Gerard Bushell comes to La Voix from his previous employment at Le Sol and is a man of simple tastes. He likes beautiful actresses, bawdy humour and lots of action.
Genevieve DuPoint on the other hand is in favour of Art with a capital A, opera and monologues on the human soul.
The two haven't agreed about a play for at least 5 years.
Celeste Ludenburg - La Gallerie Veritie (Art and Poetry)
Known for her habit of wearing black no matter the occasion Celeste has no time for happy art about happy people.
Skulls, gloom, despair? Those are the things that make her happy. Or at least would, if she ever smiled.
Despite her eccentricities Celeste is actually a talented critic with a good eye for up and coming artists. Especially those who depict the darker side of life.
Professor Blanchent - News From the Ivory Tower (Academia)
A fellow at the academy (specialist subject: hovel architecture throughout the ages) Professor Blanchent is very learned and doesn't mind who knows it. According to certain of the ruder students, he's also the most boring lecturer at the academy, able to drone on for hours without changing tone.
Still, the paper is very lucky to have him, despite his rather dry writing style.
Doctor Armand Livarot, FRAS - Medical Matters
Doctor Livarot is a graduate of the Paris Faculty of Medicine and was engaged at the height of the Guiseppe Spaghetti Scandal - thanks to his personal acquaintance with the infamous 'Italian Butcher'. (Both had ministered to the employees of the Lady's Slipper in the past). Once he had been admitted to the Royal Academy of Science, keeping Doctor Livarot on to cover medical matters became the editorial staff's least embarrassing option...
