It's been pointed out that I've not actually explained how the structure of the game works anywhere! So hopefully this should rectify this, by explaining how a game of En Garde! works.
What you'll find it that it comes across as a mix between a traditional RPG and a board game. (What it's most like is a megagame, for those familar with those).
It works like this (in broad terms):
Once you sign up, you'll be given a randomly generated character. Much like life, the lottery of birth in En Garde! is entirely unfair and pays no attention to arcane concepts like "balance". You might be the 1st son of a Duc. You might be the bastard son of a peasant. Them's the breaks.
Once you send me over a character name, a player name (which can be a pseudonym for those who prefer not to use their real name) and the email you're using for the game you'll be considered "live".
You'll be added to the Greasy Pole, a list of all characters active in the game and various stats. You're also free to add character backgrounds and letters of introduction to the forum and RP with other players.
Basic Structure of the Game
The game is split into monthly turns. Your character will be arriving the month after you get your character finalised. (January 1629 for people who sign up before the game is officially launched).
Each turn is split further into pre monthly actions, four weeks and post monthly actions.
Each month (we may shorted the turnaround time as the game develops but I'm seeing how that goes) you'll send me a list of actions/orders that your character is doing that month.
I check over those orders and adjucate them for you, with reference to the rules. And then I send you the results.
A monthly order could look something like this:
Support: Conspicious Consumption 2
Premonthly: Join the Frog and Peach Club. Try and join a regiment as a Captain, starting with the King's Musketeers and working downwards until I'm accepted into a regiment.
Week 1 - Court Charlotte Laplange. I will spend enough money to have a 50% chance of success. I will stand down to anyone from my regiment and anyone from a friendly regiment with a higher social level than me.
Week 2- Go to Hunters as a guest of John Coco. I will be toadying to him. I carouse and make 9 bets of 50 Crowns each (Cut on 6)
Week 3 - Visit my own club. Let Pierre Mauricon and Jean Alvercard toady to me. I carouse and make 9 bets of 20 Crowns each (Cut on 6)
Week 4- If I successfully courted Charlotte then practice with my rapier at home. If not go to the Bawdyhouse and buy female companionship. (I carouse but don't gamble)
That's a reasonably normal set of orders. It doesn't have to be in that particular format as long as it makes sense. While people are getting used to the game I'll happily work with them to help them with this aspect of the game while they get used to the rules.
The forum is mainly used for public communications with other characters, things like tables etc. and for Press. On the last, every turn I will be producing a newspaper report telling you what has been happening in Parisian society.
Hope that clarifies things a bit! If you have any questions feel free to ask.
