My dear Commissioner,
I currently languish in goal, a victim of unfortunate circumstance, and rely upon your common sense and knowledge of justice to dismiss the charge against me.
As the son of a chevalier of France and, in my own person, a man of medicine and honor I sincerely trust that you will, having been sent the circumstances of my arrest, acknowledge that it has all been a most frightful mistake. What's more that imbecile de Miremont and his trollop of a mistress can hardly be relied upon as credible witnesses, given as she is rumored to be a neurotic woman of unstable mind and he a commoner of questionable parentage.
My background however is impeccable, with a father who was personally knighted by His Majesty and a mother of superior breeding who once hosted the Crown Prince at a ball held in our own home. What need had I to rob this common private?! If you had seen the slovenly state of his dwellings, the miserable décor and unkempt squalor of his home you would recognize there was nothing of value there for even the most desperate of villains let alone a conscientious docteur.
Paris is in need of men of my quality, renowned champions of law and order, a physician to the needy and a stout advocate of our most august Majesty. Indeed I have decided upon strengthening my service to the Crown by renouncing the mantle of a physician and putting my energies into a more proactive role of military participation by volunteering for active duty just as soon as I am released from this period of incarceration. I hope through your good intervention I can pursue this aim with immediate effect so I call upon you to sign the necessary documentation clearing my name as a matter of urgency.
