M. Cadieux
I have heard of your arrival in Paris and that you are a talented and promising young artist. I want to welcome you. Paris is not the countryside, and you may find that here rumors are sometimes more real than facts and reputation more real than character.
We have yet to meet, of course. I am a supporter of the arts in my own humble ways and according to my own meager talents. I am currently Directorix of the Johi Theatre. In practice that means that I often adjudicate arguments between players and staff rather than engage in more artistic endeavors, though I have tried my hand at acting in religiously instructive productions.
I also serve as the Matron of the Hostel of the Magdelenes, a refuge for young women attempting to get on their feet from cruel turns of life circumstances. Many of these unfortunates are women of character for whom the facts of their lives have been hostile or discouraging. The Hostel gives them a island of peace and support from which they can relaunch their lives with a more even keel.
These women often fail to see their own strength and character as their experiences have often been dismissing, disparaging, or degrading. They have found few allies.
I wonder if you would consider an artistic endeavor that could benefit both you and these women. I thought that perhaps, once you have settled in, you might consider drawing some portraits of the residents of the Hostel. They are often women of earthy beauty more suited to the countryside then the more elevated standards of Paris, but women of character. I feel that the fact of having a drawing of themselves may help these women see themselves differently, and you would have willing subjects for the practice of your art. I am afraid that the endowment of the Hostel would not permit paying you for your work. My hope is that the works and the good spirit behind them might give you a chance to earn some notoriety in Paris society.
Please write and let me know if your schedule might permit meeting to discuss my proposal.
With respect,
Mme. H. D'Armagnac
