"Hey ladies, did you hear the sad news about Lady de Bearne, passing away like that in child birth"?
"Noooo, tell us Claudette, what happened"?
"Errr, well that was it Lady de Bearne passed away in child birth"!
"Oooh, who was the physician on hand? You'd think with all his money and status her husband would have secured the services of the best Docteur Paris has available".
"Yes, if he loved his wife and really wanted what's best for mother and child that would be the most sensible and caring thing to do. I mean you don't want some blundering sawbones poking and pushing around 'down there' if you're one of the richest men in Paris you'd get the best"!
"I agree and he's certainly got to be worth a good few livres that Huillaume, I heard tell a few years ago he was Director of the Lottery and there were many a rumour that no-one was winning anything but the money kept going missing....very strange...like it was being drained away to somewhere or someone else"!
"Go on Claudette, tell us more about the birth tragedy".
"Ok, well as I was saying.....it appears that DESPITE all his money, titles, estates, connections, jobs etc Lord de Bearne went on the cheap and employed some duffer of a Docteur and now we can see the folly in that, his wife dead and their children left without a mother".
"That's terrible and how that Lord must be cursing his error in not calling for Sieur Bastian, Paris's Premier and popular Docteur! I even heard that being the really great and kind man that he is Sieur Bastian had even informed Lord de Bearne that he had qualified for free medical care for life but that seems to have fallen upon deaf ears....or was simply refused for some crazy and unfathomable reason".
"For sure Lord de Bearne now has the rest of his life to dwell upon his choice.....that would surely be a heavy burden to carry".
"Well....you'd think....unless of course it was deliberate, that he'd hired an inexperienced physician..hoping for such an outcome"!!
"But why, why would a husband do such a thing"?
"I've no wish to cast assumptions or take heed of gossip but many are saying, whispered of course, that his eye was fixed elsewhere....attracted by another..."!
"Who, Claudette, who, tell us the name"?!
"Rumour has it that Brigitte Bougiedure is not the only one of that family attracting attention.....a certain Eloise Bougiedure too"!!
"But that's shocking she's a married woman, married to Lord Bougiedure! He's Lord de Bearne's government colleague surely such rumours must be false? Are people seriously saying that a man of Lord de Bearne's standing would seek to secure his wife's demise so that he could then try and steal away the wife of another"?
"I know, you'd think not but I was somewhat sobered by the words of Pascale the butcher when I passed his shop earlier as he said to me 'no smoke without fire' so you never know"!
"Poor Lady de Bearne, at the end of the day it's her the world has lost and if only, if only Docteur De'Ath had been called".
