My dear Bastian,
I find that I am to become a baron in November, and that means the royal ball. I would not miss it for all the whisky in Scotland (have you had it? Amazing spirit!). However, that means that Johi will be unable to appear in my new play at my new theatre in November. Thus, I find myself in need of a leading lady. Might Bertha be amenable to attending rehearsals weeks 1 and 3 in October and performing the entire month of November? I realize that this would inconvenience you by missing out on her company, but while the cat's away . . . .?
Regardless of your reply, would you care to join me in my box for the steeplechase, and bring Bertha, or someone of similar charms?
Your friend
Sieur Auguste Balls

Mon ami,
Auguste, you sterling fellow, I continue to offer thanks to the Almighty for our friendship and for how blessed I am to find myself, once again, indebted to your generosity and kindness.
Firstly, my unfettered congratulations at your coming elevation to Baron. Long overdue in my humble opinion and I've no doubt your continued rise amongst the elite of Parisian society is for the greater good of us all and an inspiration to those who seek to better themselves through hard work and commitment.
Bertha would be delighted to appear in your next production, especially as leading lady! Tis most fortuitous that I recently, being the generous and thoughtful person that I am, enrolled her for several self improvement courses and she is now no stranger to structured application, thus standing her in good stead to learn her lines and fully focus on the play. My only note of caution would be to enquire as if this is to be a musical production? It's just that if this is the case you may find the need for a 'voice double' for any singing involved since...how can I put it....Bertha...in my professional capacity as Paris's Premier Physician....may be suffering from we medical men call 'Catus felinus strangulatum', though you may have heard it referred to by the more common term 'a singing voice like a strangled cat'. Anyway, that aside, she's your woman and consider her signed up!
The Steeplechase, now that is a most splendid invite and I most heartily accept. What with Bertha being busy now I do have a certain other young lady in mind to bring along, a most recent arrival to Paris, one who I have already initiated communication with and currently await her reply. I must tell you Auguste she has all the promise of an up and coming socialite, a proper companion to one such as I, a man destined for greater things, like your good self, and if she's any sense she'll be there with me in your Owners Box next month.....and if I've any sense I'll end up in her little 'owners box' soon after!! Hurrah, the future looks promising at the moment there's just that one 'small matter' I'm still working on....that long term plan of mine....it's all coming along nicely.
Best regards,
Your most loyal friend and ally,
Bastian
