Madame Helen Bacque to Lieutenant le Chevalier Renald de la Azur CdR Greetings!
Mon Cher Renald,
Let me be the first to congratulate you upon your sterling service at the front in June, your title and your medal. Roland and I will make a point of attending the Fontainebleau Ball at the end of September in order to witness your well-deserved elevation at the hands of His Majesty.
Talking of the King, I had the honour to be presented at the Royal Court held at the Tuilleries this month and, thanks to the diligence and dedication of the staff at Madame Duschene's Academy, made a most favourable impression. Indeed, such was the interest I attracted that Roland was moved to tender a proposal of marriage before the whole Court ! In such circumstances it was impossible to refuse him and we are to be married in the final week of July. His Majesty seemed personally touched by this development and was most gracious in declining Roland's invitation to attend the proceedings.
I regret that military duties will prevent you - indeed, prevent most military men - from attending the service and following ball either, but Baroness Dupont would be more than welcome, as would all the abandoned ladies of Paris should they wish to present themselves.
Wishing for your continued Good Health and Speedy Return,
Helen

Lieutenant le Chevalier Renald de la Azur CdR to Madame Helen Bacque Congratulations
Congratulations on your upcoming wedding I hope you will forgive my absence from the service and ball but the fighting here is picking up and I could not leave with a clear conscience.
I hope you like the small wedding present, it is the best that I could do at the short notice and stuck at the front.
I believe that the Baroness will be able to make the wedding.
again congratulations on the wedding.
Your friend
Renald.

Lady Helen Gorne-Bacque, Vicomtesse de Graville, Baronne de Milly, to Monsieur Quintin Aiguille, Greetings! Monsieur Aiguille, Such a pleasure to see yourself and Mlle Johi Bachelet at our wedding last month. Monsieur le Vicomte will be purchasing l'Hotel d'Estrée this month, where I shall also be taking up residence. This means that my fine house on the Rue du Coq will be surplus to requirements and I was wondering if I might impose upon you to act as agent in its sale? I'm told that you would expect to secure 450 livres for its sale from which I would be happy to provide you with a 25 livres agency fee. Actually, my husband would be happy for you to negotiate the sale of the Maison de Graville in the Place Royale on his behalf, providing an agency fee of 65 livres on an expected sale price of 1125, and for you to oversee the purchase of l'Hotel d'Estrée this month too, providing an agency free of 100 livres regards the latter provided you make him savings of at least as much on the 2000 livres asking price. Please acquaint me of your decision regarding the above at your earliest convenience. Lady Helen Gorne-BacqueVicomtesse de Graville

OOC: Shouldn't this thread be called something different now? Maybe "Here Today, Gorne Tomorrow"?

OOC: Shouldn't this thread be called something different now? Maybe "Here Today, Gorne Tomorrow"? Or 'Gorne All Posh' maybe ? Since Helen's ID is still HEB, however, it might be easier just to give her a double-barrelled surname, Helen Gorne-Bacque ?

ID's are generally something I ignore anyway; I think they're primarily for automated games.

Lady Helen Gorne-Bacque, Vicomtesse de Graville, Baronne de Milly, to Lieutenant Renard de La Azur, CdR, Dragoon Guards Greetings! Mon Cher Renald, Thank you so much for your most generous wedding present. I'm pleased to say that Baroness Dupont seemed to enjoy herself immensely, both at my impromtu Hen Party at Madame Duschene's at the start of the month and at the wedding itself - though it was plain that your presence was sorely missed. I'm glad to see that you appear to have had another satisfactory month at the front and greatly look forward to you return. I've been trying to think of a way in which I might repay your kindness to some extent... As you know, I am currently in possession of two race horses, Gilded Bird and Boris. Both were purchased with a view to the social advantages they bestow - rather than a serious bid to secure race winnings - and at the forthcoming Steeplechase in October one of them will effectively be surplus to requirements. I was wondering if you might be interested in purchasing Boris so that you and the Baroness might enjoy a box of your own at the Steeplechase? Admittedly, Boris is past his best (he never was very bright - too inbred probably) but he is aslo eligible to run in the Downs in March and the Derby in April (should your military duties allow attendance). Anyway, wishing you continued success at the Front - and let me know whether or not securing Boris is of interest. Amitiés, HelenVicomtesse de Graville

Lieutenant Renard de La Azur, CdR, Dragoon Guards, to Lady Helen Gorne-Bacque, Vicomtesse de Graville, Baronne de Milly, Greetings!
my Dear friend Helen,
Again congratulations on your wedding and I am sorry that I was unable to attend,
As long as the King has recovered from his illness and the event is not cancelled then I will look forward to seeing you at the Fontainebleau Ball.
Thank you for the kind offer but at the minute I am in no position to take on the fiscal responsibility of a race horse, hopefully a favourable outcome here at the front should help with that.
Wishing you good Health and Married Bliss
Renald

To: Maréchal du Camp Roland Gorne, Viscomte de Graville Lady Helene Gorne-Baque, Viscomtesse de Graville, Baronne de Milly Your Graces,
to your wedding allow me to send my congratulations. May the Lord bless the years to come for the both of you.
As it was not possible for me to make your acquaintance, I am looking forward to such an occasion after I return from the frontier. But I would like you to have as a wedding gift this holy bible, handwritten in the scriptorium of Mont-Saint-Michel, just across Avranches, at the beginning of the 15th century. During the last decade of the Hundred Years´ War it got into the hands of a brave monk saving it from the Britains. This monk became the confessor of an ancestor of mine, the Baronesse Charlotte de Gratot. She inherited the book after his death, and lastly my mother gave it to me when I moved to Paris.
I remain respectfully yours
Guy d´Avranches, Lt.-Col. Picardy Musketeers

Maréchal du Camp Lord Roland Gorne, Vicomte de Graville, Baron de Milly, to Lt.Colonel Guy d'Avranches, Picardy Musketeers, Greetings! Lt.Colonel Avranches, Congratulations upon your recent extraordinary successes at the front. As you may be aware, my lady wife lost two cousins fighting with your regiment in the year just passed. Please accept our thanks in regard of the beautifully illuminated bible. Such skills have been sadly lost in the intervening centuries, I fear. (Personally, I blame the advent of printing). I was about to suggest that we could effect formal introductions at the party my wife is to host at the beginning of September, in connection with a play in which she has shown an interest, but she reminds me that (all being well) you will be at Fontainebleau to receive a knighthood at the hands of His Majesty. I'm sure that some other opportunity for us to thank you in person will present itself. Good Hunting in August, RolandVicomte de Gravilles

Lady Helen Bacque, Vicomtesse de Graville, Baronne de Milly, to Monsieur Quintin Aiguille, Greetings! Monsieur Aiguille, Thank you for your efforts regarding the purchase of l'Hotel d'Estrée last month, together with the other house sales and coach sale and purchase. Roland is so pleased with our new domicile that he has decided to host a ball at the end of the month. I trust you feel you were amply compensated ? There is an urgent matter which I wish to bring to your attention. When Willem, my coachman, called at your shop in order to pick up sundry items last month he was accosted by a band of young ruffians who demanded money from him in return for 'minding his coach'. Fortunately he was accompanied by Luc (my First Footman) and Gilles (my Head Groom) who were both burley and menacing enough to deter interference. Is it not time you sought larger premises in a less insalubrious area of the city? I would be happy to consider a loan should your takings be insufficient for the purpose. Perhaps we might discuss this further at the ' Hold Until Relieved' First Night Party I am hosting at Bothwells at the beginning of the month? (I assume that Mlle Bachelet is taking part in the play and that you will both be attending the party?). Lady Helen Gorne-BacqueVicomtesse de Graville

Maréchal de Camp Roland Gorne, Vicomte de Gravilles, Baron de Milly, to His Royal Highness Crown Prince Gaston, Duc d'Orleans, Greetings! Your Royal Highness, Should you have occasion to see His Majesty, please convey the good wishes of Madame la Vicomtesse and myself regards a full and speedy recovery. Since His Majesty's illness and the subsequent suspension of all Court Events will preclude any Royal Balls to welcome our victorious troops home from the Summer Campaign, I have decided to host a ball at l'Hotel d'Estrée for the purpose in the final week of September. It would be an inestimable honour should Your Royal Highnesses consent to attend. Your Royal Highness' Most Loyal and Devoted Servant, RolandVicomte de Graville P.S. I have just applied for the Military Governorship of Provence. A kind word from Your Royal Highness in my support would secure my eternal gratitude.

Very Best Wishes for the Future, Lady Helen Gorne-Bacque,Vicomtesse de Graville Mme la Viscomtesse, while Emelin has accepted my marriage proposal, we still have to get her family's blessing before setting a date. So weplan going to see them in September, and probably setting the wedding (if her family approves it) by November or December this year. For now, wish us good luck with her family, and if they agree, we'll set the details. I remain, Madamme, your most humble servant Baron Huillaume Lagarde de Béarne

Maréchal de Camp le Vicomte Roland Gorne, Sieur de Graville, Milly etc., Royal Governor of Paris, to Captain le Baron Huillaume Lagarde de Bearne, OC 4th Company Royal Foot Guards, Director of the Lottery, Greetings! Mon Cher Huillaume, Helen and I must tender our most heartfelt congratulations regarding your engagement to the lovely Emelin. Please let us know the date of the wedding as soon as it is decided so that we may do our utmost to attend. In fact, I find myself in a position to offer my Best Man an early wedding present! As may have escaped your notice thanks to the furore over King Louis' sudden death, I have been appointed Royal Governor of Paris. (I would have preferred a governorship a little less in the public eye - Provence for example - but no matter). One of my duties is to appoint the commander of the Royal Foot Guards and, needless to say, a request from you to this effect would be treated most favourably. The current incumbent can hardly be considered competent in the wake of having His Majesty die right under his nose and a 'request' for his immediate resignation has already been dispatched to him. My duties also include judging all Low and Minor Civil crimes which occur in the Ile de France. Needless to say, should my Best Man have the misfortune to appear before me in such circumstances a dreadful mistake will immediately be assumed to have taken place. In finishing I must let you know that Helen and myself wish you every happiness in your forthcoming marriage to Emelin and look forward to welcoming you both back to Court. RolandVicomte de Graville Royal Governor of Paris [OOC: Commander of the RFG gives no favours and the SPs and Pay are exactly the same as in the Rank/Regiment table under section 18.40. It seems clear that, although appointed by the Royal Governor of Paris, it is actually a rank alongside which a 'real' appointment may be held.
Also, there is no specific date for the appointment, which implies that the Royal Governor of Paris can appoint/replace the RFG Colonel at will. In any event, the appointment of a new Governor / accession of a new King seems an obvious time for a new man at the RFG helm... ]
