The Social Whirlwind by Le Mole.
January, it is my favourite time of the year. To see all the excitable young gentleman, flush with the goodwill of Christmas, arrive in Paris to seek their fame and fortune. Why, it fair warms my heart.
And as always, some gentlemen chose to make a splash right from the start. Gervais Adrien Piquet chose to spend in a way benefiting his station. He gave graciously to the poor unfortunates of Paris. It is also notable that while other less fortunate gentlemen seemed happy with a cheap apartment, Monseiur Piquet chose to buy a house in the nicer parts of Paris upfront.
Massif Orne Cheval and Germain de Miremont also made a good impression on your humble columnist, buying themselves some rather fine outfits. And de Miremont's sabre... It was something of a work of art in its own right, with engravings and a pure gold hilt. Good show monsieurs.
Which brings us to Everard Spanghero, that merchant's son from the provinces. Naturally, the shoes were exquisite. (His father was in the trade after all). And his outfit was fine if somewhat gaudy. Too much silk for my taste, but it made an impression. But that hat. Sacre bleu! Monsieur Spanghero! Lemon yellow is always a strict non in my book. And it is certainly not a colour that should be used with a peacock feather. Money is all very well, but it can't buy you class as Everard insisted on demonstrating this month.
Naturally, when hotblooded young men arrive in Paris for the first time they will turn their attentions to the charms of the Parisian ladies. (Well, mostly. Massif, Everard and most shockingly the highborn Raoul Jardin skipped courting entirely for the baser charms of the Bawdyhouse).
Some were more successful in matters of the heart then others. Germain De Miremont and Emmelina Boudon seemed very taken with each other's ample charms. Monsieur De Miremont turned up on her doorstep in his very first week in Paris and the two were inseparable for the rest of the month, even going to look at an apartment together. (Hmm, that is rather quick no? Are you sure you two haven't interacted before now?) Poor Renald de La Azur was far less lucky, being left standing on the doorstep of Murieldis Lefrançois after having the door slammed in his face! And as far as Eloise LeBeau is concerned... ah, that fair lady deserves a paragraph on her own.
The sweet Eloise was in demand right from the start, as Gervais Adrien Piquet and the aspiring artist Aurèle Delecroix both turned up on her doorstep at the start of the week! Potential unpleasantness was avoided when Monsieur Delecroix gallantly chose to stand down to his social superior. (It is perhaps the case that he was also somewhat intimidated by the fact Monsieur Piquet had turned up with very lavish gifts; gold stemmed flowers with silver petals!). And despite some initial resistance Mademoiselle LeBeau was won over by Gervais's charms and his offer to sketch her beauty. And the two enjoyed an entire week of relationship bliss. Until Jean-Pierre Laurent turned up and stole the lady's heart a week later! Ah, how fickle the female heart can be. But the saga of Eloise LeBeau does not end there, as we shall see later...
In other notable events Gervais Adrien Piquet spent a week hobnobbing with luminaries from Paris' art gallery scene. More notable was Massif Orne Cheval whose lack of skill at gambling worked against the laws of probability entirely! I dread to think how many hundreds poor Massif must have gambled away at the Horse Guards Club. Only to follow that up by yet more losses at the Bawdyhouse. Monsieur, perhaps gambling is not for you if you wish your money to last.
Of course, the big event of the month was the party hosted by Jean-Pierre Laurent (and his lovely mistress Eloise) at Hunters. It was a good turnout, although it has to be said that some uncharitable souls might suggest that Monsieur Laurent was slumming it just a little bit too much with some of the attendees. Father Lachapelle and Father Robin were both there, showing the human side of the church. Everard Spanghero turned up, unfortunately still wearing that hat. Germain de Miremont turned up, inevitably accompanied by Emmelina Boudon (are those two attached at the hip).
Pride of place at the party went to a charcoal sketch of the Parisian by Aurèle Delecroix who seemed very proud of himself. While it won't be getting into any galleries, I am feeling charitable and it was a reasonable effort by a talented amateur.
Perhaps most awkward was the attendance of Gervais Adrien Piquet. Made even moreso by the fact he was apparently unaware that Eloise had left him and so he proceeded to toady to Jean-Pierre Laurent regardless! And got pleasantly drunk and gambled. His good mood was only broken by Eloise having a quiet word with him, followed by him storming out. Could we be seeing our first duel of the heart next month?
News from the Front by Colonel Beaubeau (rtd)
Hurumph. I was pleasantly surprised that so many of our new arrivals joined up to do their duty for God and the King. I was less surprised that none of them seemed to have any concept of working their way up and all, to a man, bought officer commissons.
The cavalry regiments did well this month. Renard de La Azur and Raoul Jardin are both new Captains in the Dragoon Guards. Jean-Pierre Laurent on the other hand has joined the Queens Own Carabiniers as a Captain. Massif Orne Cheval joins Laurent as a Subaltern. (Amusingly, after being turned down by the Dragoon Guards).
Everard Spanghero was not wanted by either of the regiments he applied to, despite already having bought a horse. And Germain de Miremont's fancy pants sabre did not in fact get him into the army, being turned down by four regiments in a row before he got the message into his head and went home. (Maybe a military career isn't for you Miremont?)
Exciting news from the Frontier where the King cancelled all other engagements to take command of the troops himself. Inspired by this, our boys drove the Holy Roman Empire from the field. Long Live the King! And well done those lads. For once.
Ecumenical Matters by Father Jacques
God provides.
Although apparently not enough for our new priests Father Lachapelle and Father Robin who decided that they wanted more expensive accomaodation then their church rooms and went out house hunting. So far the Church is choosing to be leniant, but they can rest assured it has been noticed.
At least their sermons have been well received, especially the ones they both held in the third week of the month.
Father Robin gave a stirring sermon on the religiously misguided and misled, with Everard Spanghero in the front rows of the pews hanging on his every woord.
And Father Lachapelle chose to focus on the virtue of charity, with a full congregation including Germain de Miremont and Renald de La Azur in attendance. Imagine the surprise Monsieur de La Azur must have felt when he was named in the sermon as an example of a charitable gentleman. What an unbelievably unlikely coincidence.

The Chancellor has announced that an expedition to Holland is leaving at the end of the month. Investors are welcome and a good return is expected.
OOC: You can order an investment in this expedition at the start of the month although investments are in blocks of 1000L so only rich characters will be eligible! (You can also pool money between several characters for this).
Anyone who invests at least 1000 on their own may choose to accompany the expedition. This has some danger (you can get killed) but doubles returns. However, no full time member of the Military may go.
