Blacksmith: And what’ll be ye wantin’?
Jacques: This armor must be repaired and shined to the highest gleam.
Blacksmith: Looks like you got yourself into a bit of a scrape. Messin’ about with anuther lord’s lady?
Jacques: The damage was received from enemy soldiers as I fought to protect our King along the Spanish frontier.
Blacksmith: Ooh ho! Gots a bloody Hero of France in me shop.
Jacques: Do you want the job or not.
Blacksmith: I gots to see the metal of your coin. I aint no gentleman to take a commission on credit.
Jacques: [tossing coins upon the anvil] This is to ensure that the job gets done. I’ll double it if I can see my face in the breastplate by the end of the week.
Blacksmith: [Brightening noticeably] Right you are sieur! To whom shall I have the armor delivered?
Jacques: To Captain Jacques Bougiedure at the Dragoon Guards Barracks.

Tailor: Good day Monsieur! How may I be of assistance?
Jacques: I have need of new uniforms. This paltry rag is the best one that I own after the summer campaign.
Tailor: It is well worn to be sure and bears many marks of the glorious combat you must have seen. But it is clean and well-repaired. You clearly understand the importance of caring for your clothing.
Jacques: Yes, I was fortunate to find an apprentice tailor in the ranks of my squadron to serve as my valet. But I must replace it before it falls off of my body.
Tailor: What sort of uniforms do you need?
Jacques: I will eventually need two duty uniforms to be constructed of heavy, durable fabric, but of immediate importance is a dress uniform to be made according to these specifications.
Tailor: [Reading from the specifications] White silk undershirt with lace collar and cuffs. Red velvet doublet with paned sleeves, silver buttons, and regimental ornamentation in gold thread. Black velvet breeches with gold thread piping and a leather reinforced crotch. Short black cloak with red silk lining and silver fasteners. Monsieur has excellent taste.
Jacques: I need the dress uniform in ten days.
Tailor: That can be done but will be more expensive.
Jacques: [taking out his money pouch] It is fortunate that the Spanish were generous.
Tailor: Very good, Monsieur. Might I suggest a wide brimmed capotain with a lovely ostrich plume to protect yourself from the sun?
Jacques: Indeed. My next stop is the hatter’s.

Jacques: Good Afternoon Monsieur. I have need of new boots.
Bootmaker: Yes sieur! I have recently made a lovely pair for Ensign d’Blancheur. Very good for running and hiding in the dark.
Jacques: Running and hiding might appeal to an infantryman but I am a cavalier, Monsieur. My requirements are more befitting the battlefield.
Bootmaker: I do apologize sieur.
Jacques: I require a riding boot with a stiff lower half to protect the foot and calf, but the tops must be widely flared to be pulled up while mounted to protect the knees and thighs and pushed down to permit freedom of movement for more pedestrian activities.
Bootmaker: As to material?
Jacques: Something durable but able to take a high shine.
Bootmaker: Easily done sieur. Might I suggest stockings as well? My wife makes them in either silk or linen.
Jacques: Linen stockings will suffice but instruct her that they should have lace tops that can be pulled down over the tops of the boots when worn down.

Hatter: Ah, Sieur Jacques! I have been expecting you.
Jacques: Good Day, Monseur. I take it that my order is ready?
Hatter: Yes, sieur. A lovely broad brimmed, black capotain with a red ostrich feather. I must say that red is an unusual choice.
Jacques: I chose it to match the color of my regimental uniform. I had considered a red hat with a black feather but did not want to be mistaken for a member of the Cardinal’s Guard by a King’s Musketeer.
Hatter: They do tend to cut first and ask questions later.
Jacques: You will deliver and affix the other ostrich feathers by the end of the week?
Hatter: It will be my great personal privilege to do so. You shall be the envy of your regiment.
Jacques: [trying on the new hat] Very elegant. You are a credit to your profession.
Hatter: Thank you, Sieur Jacques. I hope to be of service to you and your friends in the future.

OOC: Referring to the posts about boots in the Rumor Mill was too good to pass up!
