His Majesty's Condition worsens. Royal Doctor Arrested
The Palace has announced that His Majesty, Louis XIII is now in a critical condition. The Royal Doctor has been arrested, on suspicion of being a Spanish agent. Further news as things develop.
OOC:
This has the following effects.
No royal events in September.
Entitlement ceremonies are postponed until October. (People still count as having their titles for the purposes of appointments).
All appointments normally made by the King are being handled by the Minister of State, so will need a favour of level 8, not 9.

The Social Whirlwind by Le Mole
For a change, I think I shall start with some financial news. One of our newer arrivals, Charles Champ, certainly knows how to comport himself in style. I was very impressed with his new coach, truly a purchase to make any less fortunate gentleman envious. I will note that Monsieur Aiguille's deep discounting seems to be tempting those who really should know better. Should Viscomtess Gorne and Baron Lagarde de Bearne really be rubbing shoulders with the common folk when they do their shopping?
I was most amused by scenes in Blue Gables this month. Certainly, Monsieur D'Applaud and Mme. Hugolina seemed to enjoy the company of newly qualified doctor, Monsieur de Mande. But it was quite obvious to the club's patrons that Monsieur de Mande's "companion" was not quite what the club normally sees. Indeed, some suspected they might have seen her in rather less civilised circumstances! Please de Mande. Being a red blooded gentleman is expected. Parading your whores in public is rather over the line.
I will leave my dear friend Celeste to comment on the artistic talents or otherwise of Baron Lagarde de la Bearne. I am more interested in his talents as a party host. And I am pleased to say he and Dame Emelin know how to practise that art. Certainly Monsigneur de la Bassée seemed to think so. And Subaltern Lannes had a good enough time to buy another bottle of wine on his own account. (This is, I feel, becoming something of a trend...)

Romantic Interlude
By Yvonne de Villepin
As I had hoped it does indeed seem that the nuptials of Viscomte and Viscomtess Gorne have inspired some of our young men into popping the question!!! Congratulations are due to Baron Lagarde de Bearne and Dame Emelin!!! It seems that the Baron having achived financial stability has made him ready to pursue the joys of marital bliss!!! As if one annoucement wasn't exciting enough, congratulations are also in order for Subaltern Lannes and Mme Acelina!!! Well done dears!!! I wish you much happiness in eternity!!! Gentlemen who wish to follow this fine example may wish to remember that our unattached young ladies will all be in Paris next month!!!

Celeste Ludenburg
I have important news. I have decided to graciously accept the heartfelt apology offered by Baron Lagarde de Bearne for previous wrongs. I look forward to attending his wedding and await my invitation.
The Baron was good enough to invite me to a small art exhibition of his work he was hosting at Hunters. And I have to say, he is a rather talented amateur.
While I am not one with much interest in military matters, for it brings too much pain, I still have to praise Time to Rally. It is a spendid naturalist approach to the meeting of two military men, with Baron Hulluame capturing his meeting with the sadly departed Major of the Flanders Frontier Regiment. Every nuance of the gentleman's expressions is expertly captured. Indeed, I feel that Baron Lagarde de Bearne somehow managed to predict the tragedy to come, such is the poignancy of the piece.
And of course the centerpice, The Apology. It shows the Baron presenting a painting to, well, modesty forbids but she is a remarkably stylish young lady with a taste for the darker romances in life. But that does not bias me when I say it is a fine piece and I shall hang it in my front hall next to the porcelain bats.
Bravo, Hullaume. You are forgiven.

ROME and its influence on the Parisian church
By Pastor Jacques
TRAGEDY has struck the ROMAN church. Monsigneur Lachapelle was due to RETURN this month but his SHIP has been lost at SEA. Perhaps the LORD has given his JUDGEMENT on the allegations against Mme. GORNE and Monsigneur ROBIN.
Speaking of Monsigneur Robin he has managed to REDEEM himself in the HOLY Land with an apparently fine SERMON. Perhaps he shall REJOIN Paris next month?
Baron Lagarde de Bearne held a MASS for the health of HIS Majesty this month, presided over by Monsigneur de la Bassée. Attendance was GOOD and Monsieur D'Applaud was particularly vocal in his PRAYERS.
Monsieur CHAMP showed himself to be a PIOUS man, giving his spare funds to the CHURCH rather than WHORES and LIQUOR like many other so called GENTLEMEN.

Medical Matters by Docteur Armand Livarot, FRAS, Royal Botanist
Baron Rodolphe Alméras, the Royal Physician, has been arrested on suspicion of treason and the leadership of His Majesty's medical team has fallen to Brigadier-General Armand Jacquier as Surgeon General. The Brigadier reports that the health of His Majesty is still giving grievous cause for concern thanks to all treatments so far having proven to be ineffective against the mystery illness. He has stated that the scurrilous rumours that the King may have been poisoned have, as yet, no proven basis in fact and calls once more on His Majesty loyal subjects to remember Him in their prayers.
Monsieur Plyen de Mande added to his existing medical knowledge by successfully completing a rigorous University course. He was duly awarded a Diplôme d'État de Docteur en Médecine from the Paris Faculty of Medicine and may henceforth set up in practice. I'd like to take this opportunity to wish Docteur de Mande every success in his chosen career.

Hold Until Relieved is a serious play and purported to be of a somewhat higher calibre than Monsieur Eau's previous offering. The actors will include Messieurs Eau and d'Applaud and Mademoiselles Boudet, Bachelet and Bissonette. Lady Helen Gorne-Bacque has consented to serve in loco patronis for the production and will host the first night party at her new club, Bothwells.

OCTOBER The Theatre Royal is hoping to present the a production by the King's Men. The company is discussing the possibility of staging an opera by a protegé of His Majesty - but it is possible that it will not be finished in time and a more feasible project might be settled upon. Since this has not yet been finalised, however, the Theatre will accept alternative bookings from interested third parties.

Sellings were low again, and there was no winner. So the prize for September is 1500 Cr for the exact number and 325 Cr for the adjacent ones.

Baron Rodolphe Alméras, the Royal Physician, is being held in the Concièrgerie for further questioning following the death of His Majesty King Louis XIII. A deputation from the Faculty of Medicine has visited the offices of the Commissioner of Public Safety at the Châtelet to petition for his release. They pointed out that Monsieur le Baron has served loyally for many years and has successfully seen His Majesty through equally serious bouts of illness in the past. Since, when a young boy, his family fled to Paris to escape from the Inquisition he can surely have little loyalty to Spain.
The Commissioner has charged the Faculty with conclusively ascertaining the cause of the late King's death and to examine the contents of Baron Rodolphe's surgery and laboratory for anything which might have been instrumental in His premature demise.
