Observations on my first turn in the game:
After an initial flurry of activity on the boards last week, things appear to have hibernated as we submit orders and await results. I find myself checking the forums several times a day, hoping for something new, only to be disappointed by an ad for Russian Viagra.
What does everyone else do to keep engaged with Liminal En Garde while awaiting the next turn?

What does everyone else do to keep engaged with Liminal En Garde while awaiting the next turn? Run QA testing on Russian viagra It's always a good idea to plan at least three months ahead - if you haven't already. Not much you can do if you're going to be at the front for three months, but what are your character's objectives? Rise up the military ladder ? That means that there are probably obstacles you'll have to circumvent. Will you be able to circumvent them on your own? If not, figure out what help you'll need, who might provide it, and start paving the way for possible help. What do you aim to do when you return to Paris? Secure a mistress? Choose one and start courting her (through the press) now. You can compose the responses to your advances yourself - and publish them as a guest in the 'Rumour Mill' forum. It might discourage others from snatching her while you're away. Or it might encourage someone to purposely make an enemy of you by doing so. Either way, your game life becomes more interesting. Buy a house? Start asking advice as to the best areas of Paris and / or instruct an NPC lawyer to begin making enquiries on your behalf. Are there any skills you'll need to improve to achieve your objectives? Make enquiries as to who are the best tutors. Make their acquaintance. Tentatively book future lessons. What about your family? How is your father taking the fact that you are turning your back on the church career he has prepared the way for? How is the health of those standing between you and the Marquisate? Might it be worth looking into ways of improving your chances (check out option 5 in the 8.11 Pregnancy section of the draft rules). Could this be utilised for your won benefit? Are the risks worth the rewards? Should some discrete enquiries be made? The only real way keep engaged is to get some press / role-play plot lines going.

The games I played before were by snail mail, so the time between turns was about a month.
As you can expect, this last time was quite longer, since the moment you sent your turn to the moment you received the results.
So, I don't see the problem here. We can talk among ourselves to plan (be it in Gentlemen communications or by PM) ,or you can, as gaston suggests, plan for the next turns (I agree in planning for some turns ahead, and I advise to plan always as per worst case).

I load all the charts into spreadsheets, and obsessively look for ways to increase my expected SP return by 0.3 per month.

Well, if I shall be at the front, I pore over the charts of predicted battle results, to select the most favourable tactics. Reckless bravery never came out a winner.
At least, I used to. Unfortunately, I have not had time to adapt them to the various rule changes.

And I forgot, of course, our favourite way to keep engaged: discussing about the rules

From a player (rather than GM! perspective) I see En Garde! as a cross between something like a tabletop RPG and an PBM diplomacy game. There's opportunity for RP between turns, but it's something you pick up now and again rather than do constantly.

Hmmm - as long as I don't end up playing "Austria-Hungary" - that's enough to put anyone off! Given the way the Battle Results go, I think its more like Risk!
