Preparing for the Races...
First Voice: You aren't thinking of inviting any of those oiks who appeared at the remembrance service to share our box at the Derby are you ? That Monsieur Galopin carries a definite whiff of the farmyard and the way Monsieur Eau insisted on shouting 'huzzah' every time Abbé de la Bassée mentioned bravery was frankly embarrassing. I'm so glad you invited neither of them to the wake afterwards.
Second Voice: I'm thinking of inviting Abbé Adam to share our box, by way of celebration regards his recent clerical promotion.
First Voice: Oh, he seems a decent sort. Knows how to comport himself in polite society too. Feel free to invite him to my next Place Royale gathering.
Second Voice: If he shares our box you can invite him yourself Roland. As to the fourth, I'm thinking of Monsieur d'Applaud again.
First Voice: I'm still not clear how it came about that he was invited to use your box for the Downs...?
Second Voice: I ran into him at Madame Duschene's Roland. A most gentil and well-behaved young fellow whom I'm sure will meet with your approval. He has a good eye for horseflesh too - he backed Gloria for the Downs and came away somewhat richer.
First Voice: Mmm...Does he have any tips for the Derby...?

A Satisfied Convert...
First Voice: So Farzad, you have decided to follow the teachings of this red-faced infidel and turn your back on the Prophet, Peace be upon Him ?
Second Voice: Yes Brother, for who would not wish to enjoy the favours of the Beauteous and Lascivious Helen, confess the sin, and still go to Paradise? I have rewarded the Good Father richly for putting me on the True Path !
First Voice: How many camels ?
Second Voice: None! I offered camels of course, but he refused them and demanded sheep...

It cannot be right, my friend.
What? What's that? What's not right? Am I... I'm not wearing the wrong colours, am I?
No, don't be silly! I was referring to the the words of Abbe de la Bassée. He said something to the effect of, "If you wager on the Derby you will inevitable lose unless you heed the word of God." It is clear - he is saying that Gloria is going to win the Derby. 'Gloria in excelsis Deo' after all. So if Gloria doesn't win then, well, people will accuse him of not truly speaking, or perhaps listening to, the word of God, and if she does win then he has lessened his worth to that of a common tipster. It really cannot be right.

The Ducal Palace, Torino, March 1671 Her Royal Highness Princess Christine Marie of Savoy, to Madame Helen Bacque Greetings!
Ma Chère Helen,
It seems an age since you were a guest at the Palace. I believe that your return journey to Paris was most exciting and am pleased that you arrived safely. Privately, I was also pleased that you enabled so many fellow Frenchmen to escape the fate which the dastardly Austrians had planned for them - and can now say so openly thanks to the recent developments on the diplomatic front.
I have a favour to ask.
Some time before your arrival we played host to another talented young lady, Signorina Leonora Baroni, a most accomplished singer, theorbist, lutenist, viol player, and composer. Like her mother Adriana Basile before her she had been in the service of the Duke of Mantua but, given the current uncertainty over the succession, she has decided to go to France to complete her musical education.
She has been studying under the Viola da Gamba virtuoso André Maugars, Prior of the Monastery St. Pierre-Eynac in Le Puy-en-Velay, for the past few months. I've just heard that she is now going to Paris to study at the city's foremost Musical Academy, the College de St Michel on the Rue Perdue, just east of the Faculty of Medicine.
The favour I ask is this. While she is in Paris, could you take Leonora under your wing to some extent - and let her know that you do so at my behest? When she decides to return to Italy I would like to entice her into my service rather than see her talent lost to Mantua.
I am confident that you will be kind enough to perform this small service for me and should I ever be in a position to repay your kindness please don't hesitate to call upon,
Princess Christine Marie Duchesse of Savoy
