An Unfortunate Embassy... By Visconte Giuseppe La Monte Savoyard Ambassador to the Court of King Louis XIII
At the behest of Sister Agatha of the Ursuline Convent of St. Denis (the Aunt of the new Duke of Savoy), Madame Helen Bacque travelled to Turin this month to deliver some creature comforts to Major Jean-Paul Marsaud, who was captured during an action around Pinerolo in November. She was accompanied by Curate Adam de la Bassée and Monsieur Pierre Flump (who had been commissioned to produce a portrait of Major Marsaud by Sister Agatha).
Whilst travelling to Savoy with the returning Ducal entourage they prevailed upon the good nature of His Grace Duke Vittoria Amadeo to set the Major free and had high hopes of returning him safely to France. Unfortunately, upon arrival at the Monastery of Staffarda (where Major Marsaud and the other French captives were being held) they found that the Savoyard garrison had been replace by a detachment of Austrians under the command of one Colonel von Rattenburg. Far from honouring the Ducal order to release Major Marsaud, Colonel von Rattenburg announced that, by order of Emperor Ferdinand II, both the Major and the rest of the French captives were to be executed at dawn...
That night, under cover of the confusion resulting from a fire at the Abbey stables (purposely started by Monsieur Flump, Subaltern Icaro Parrillo and some of the Ducal Horse Guards assigned to escort the party) Curate de la Bassée, Madame Bacque and the remaining Horse Guards managed to overpower the Austrian soldiers guarding Major Marsaud and the other prisoners and set all the captives free. Unfortunately, Major Marsaud received a fatal pistol wound whilst entering Madame Bacque's awaiting carriage. Similarly, Monsieur Flump received an ultimately fatal musket shot whilst retreating from the burning stables. Tragically, both gentlemen succumbed to their wounds on the journey back to the French border, though many of the other French prisoners made it safely home.
Duke Vittorio Amadeo has sent a strongly worded letter to Emperor Ferdinand protesting in the strongest possible terms against this unwarranted Austrian interference in Savoyard affairs.

The Social Whirlwind by Le Mole
Well, Captain FitzBraose certainly has a taste for the finer things in life. And I mean that literally. The gentleman spent much of his time this month sampling the best of the fine delicacies Paris has to offer. Surely the chefs of Paris are happy to have a gourmand in our fair city, one who can appreciate the artistry? I was so impressed by this extravagance that it almost made up for the fact Captain FitzBraose spent all month at the Military Academy, the absolute dullard. Almost, but not quite. Do better.
Speaking of big spenders, it seems that Baron Lagarde de Bearne is enjoying the financial freedom offered by the mortaging of his estate. With a new fine coach to his name and a large mansion in the fashionable district of Paris, it seems like Baron Lagarde de Bearne is finally living as his status suggests. Still, while I normally approve of this extravagance I can't help but observe that his prolfiic spending habits have led to problems before...
It did allow him to attend the events on offer to the higher echelons of high society however. Not only did he attend the Royal Ball held in the honour of the Ambassador from Savoy (and, I hear, drew much applause with his dancing prowess), he was even invited to a private party in the Austrian embassy and got to spend some time attending to the Archbishop of Paris. This boy could go places, if he can keep the Shylocks at bay...
Things at the lower end of society were rather quiet, with no notable parties to speak of (perhaps because the always popular Mademoiselle Helen had other business this month).
Guardsman Gabriel did make something of an impression at his new club, the Blue Gables. Or more specifically Mademoiselle Acelina did. The poor chap was somewhat overshadowed by his mistress's popularity. Still, even the dullest star can shine when reflected in the sun.

Romantic Interlude
By Yvonne de Villepin
It saddens me to hear that the romance of Sieur Laurent and Ms. Éloïse has come to a sorry end! You see Sieur Laurent made what has now become his traditional marriage proposal and rather than finally getting over her stubborness Ms. Éloïse chose to deal with her fears by instead breaking off the relationship! I'm sorry to have to tell you this dear but you're being very silly indeed and should perhaps reconsider your behaviour if you don't want to end up an old maid and I'm sure that you do not wish that to happen! Poor Sieur Laurent's misery was only compounded when he tried to move on in the company of our very own Ms. Celeste only to find the door slammed in his face! I'm truly sorry for your troubles Sieur Laurent but perhaps you should find a nice solid girl rather than going after those with artistic temperments! At least you're trying which is more than I can say about Captain Fitzbraose who spent his second month avoiding any female company whatsoever! I very rarely say this dear but maybe a trip to the bawdyhouse would at least get you over your obvious fear of the opposite sex? The final gentleman who drew my attention was our newly arrived actor Monsieur D'Applaud who obviously understands that ladies like a man who is well mannered for I noticed he spent much of his time in the finishing school runn by my very good friend Madame Duschene even impressing Dushy further by turning up in style in a freshly painted highway coatch! I will say that while I know you actor boys have a certain reputation next month you may want to discover the joys of a true lady rather then spending your time enjoying the fleeting pleasure of the company of the girls of the Lady's Slipper!

ROME and its influence on the Parisian church
By Pastor Jacques
And ANOTHER member of the order of Saint FRANCIS doth DISGRACE himself as we see Monsigneur Lachapelle off to Persia to learn the ways of HUMILITY and not LYING.
But it seems Monsigneur ROBIN forgot he was supposed to REDEEM himself as he instead managed to DISGRACE himself furthere in the HOLY Land. He was supposed to MINISTER to the HEATHEN and yet when the time came he HID up a TREE and refused to COME down. What will ROME think?
At least Father de la Bassée managed to avoid TRIBUNALS as he went on his VAINGLORIOUS rescue attempt. Perhaps he is BETTER suited to HEROICS than SPIRITUAL matters?

Reports from the Front by General Georges Boulle (rtd.)
Glad to see that there are still some brave lads ready to sign up and fight the enemy. Welcome to the French Guard, Private Yves. I hope you do yourself proud and I'm sure you bloody well will.
Another quiet month at the Spanish Frontier, with troops staying in their barracks and having a well deserved bloody rest before the Spring Campaign. March will see us trying to gain ground as the enemy does the same. That's normally how war bloody well works after all.
Flandersbore the brunt of the fighting again, as the enemy overran our defensive positions. The Normandy Regiment were at the point of where the enemy broke through, taking heavy casualties as the enemy poured troops into the area. Due to intelligence telling us the enemy plan to step up their aggression even more, the Summer Army will be being sent to Flanders in March. If the enemy want bloody war, then bloody war they shall have.
Another month of peace in Lorraine, which looks set to be the case for some time.
In Savoy, the enemy has withdrawn its forces. Thankfully it seems this is one front we don't have to worry about for now.
Next Month's Deployments

Medical Matters by Docteur Armand Livarot, FRAS, Royal Botanist
The Minister of War has appointed Brigadier-General Armand Jacquier as Surgeon General.
Thanks to my own appointment as Royal Botanist I have decided to operate my medical practice as a Médecin, rather than as a Docteur, for the moment so as give myself time to fulfil my new duties and to devote to further studies at the School of Medicine.
I will be available for engagement on retainer to see ladies though pregnancy for a fee of 15 livres per month and to oversee fencing training bouts for a fee of 20 livres per meeting.

Limelight
Hold on to your gussets, ladies, there's a new actor in town! Not one of your poncey types either. Went straight for the Archduke's Men, them of the big explosions and big plots and top bleeding totty. Even better, I understand Chardonnay Claude is a bit of a lad, having spent a week since his arrival in Paris with the beautiful birds of the Lady's Slipper. GET IN THERE MY SON!
- Gerard Bushell
It is something of a disappointment to hear own new Thespian, Monsieur D'Applaud has chosen to squander his talents on a company known primarily for how base its 'theatre' (and I use the word under protest) is. More promising are the rumours that Ms. Helen has plans to bring her talents to the Art world with a potential ballet. Having had the pleasure of Ms. Helen's company before, I can gratefully report that her class and charm manage to outstrip her humble birth by a considerable amount.
