Shock Result at the Futurity!
An unexpected result at The Futurity, as 6:1 outsider Sassy Sea romped home to victory.
Monsieur Porget, the owner of Sassy Sea said "I have a fine eye for quality, be that racehorses or ladies. You've seen proof of the first. Why not visit the Lady's Slipper in February so you can see the proof of the second with your own eyes".
Much excitement was in the air, with the great and good making sure to patronise the races.
His majesty did not leave the royal box (a spokesman said the King had a "poorly tummy"), but Her Most Christian Majesty Anne of Austria by the Grace of God, of the Kingdom of France and of His Majesty's other Realms and Territories paid a visit to the box of Monsieur Flump, where she was apparently much charmed by his talk of artistic matters.
The box of Subaltern D'Blancheur saw much activity. Much celebration was had, as Lady of Shallot had placed on her first outing. Subaltern D'Blancheur was joined by his companion Mademoiselle Sabilina, while Lieutenant de la Azur and Baroness Dupont joined in the festivities. In fact, the celebrations were so noticable that the party was joined by Grand Duke Maximilian who stayed drinking with the group long after the race had ended!
Full Race Results
1st Place - Sassy Sea 2nd Place - Lady of Shallot 3rd Place - White Gold 4th Place - Desert Orchid 5th Place - Sir Cat 6th Place - King's Sword 7th Place - Gilded Bird 8th Place - Black Rose

The Social Whirlwind by Le Mole
And so, 1631 arrives! I hope you all had a joyous new year.
Even those of you in financial straits. I talk of course of poor old Baron Lagarde de Bearne. Hopefully mortaging his estate has put him on firmer financial grounds, even if it has lead to whispers and titters from some of the more unkind members of Parisian society. Certainly, he at least seemed to have the money to attend the Royal Ball with Dame Belya this month. (The two of them were seen the week after attending Madame Duschene's School of Social Graces so perhaps they are planning to be seen at court more frequently). Perhaps he will even find a shop suitable for his station now. I have to say that I don't quite think that Le Manteau de Padam is the right place to shop for high fashion.
Speaking of shopping, it is rare than any other gentleman can keep up with Monsieur Flump's extravagance, but Guardsman Gabriel managed to surpass him this month! Quail eggs, hats with peacock feathers, full silk outfits. Gabriel is truly a man that knows how to live properly.
Gabriel was also seen at the traditional "religious gathering" at the end of the month with the host Father de la Bassée. Captain Bonbeur was also at Blue Gables that week, but naturally choose not to socialise with the lower class patrons.
It does seem that Subaltern D'Blancheur is rather excited by his new membership of Hunters. He was rather enthusiastically recreating his duel when he overstrained himself on the lunge and strained a muscle in his arm. Fortunately Mademoiselle was there to look after him, albeit while rolling her eyes and sighing loudly.

La Gallerie Veritie
Celeste Ludenburg
It is time, I feel, for me to swallow my trauma and face the outside world again. It will not be easy, but I will perform the happy critic for you.
As you no doubt know and laugh about behind my back, my horse Black Rose came last in The Futurity. The joke is on you, sheep. It was merely a test race, even if I did not mention it before.
But of course what you all want to hear about is the party cum art exhibition held by Marechal de Camp Roland Gorne, Vicomte de Graville, Secretary of State in conjuction with his mistress, Mademoiselle Bacque.
Pride of place was the painting Fear and Doubt by Pierre Flump. It was adequate at least, enough to justify Monsieur Flump's ambitions of a professional art career. Don't think I didn't notice the strange resemblence of the devil to a certain Abbe. Children, please.
Certainly, Captain Fitzbraose seemed to enjoy himself. As did Lieutenant de la Azur and Baroness Dupont. In fact, Lieutenant de la Azur choose to display a painting of his own. A portrait of an unnamed lady whom, I shall observe, looked nothing like Baroness Dupont. It was rather good. Certainly more than one might have hoped for from a military man. Perhaps de la Azur should consider a change of career?

For Honour by Chevalier Zacharie Grosjean
It has been too long since Paris saw the clash of steel and wits.
But I am happy to say this was rectified this month, with Subaltern d'Blancheur and Captain Fitzbraose due to cross swords over a dispute regarding a young lady.
It seems that by the time of the duel the gentlemen had already resolved the issue between themselves, but quite rightly they still wished to satisfy honour correctly.
Subaltern d'Blancheur had gracefully offered the choice of weapons to Captain Fitzbraose and rapiers were the weapon of choice. Being over a rather small matter, it was a duel to first blood. I have always liked first blood duels. No overpowering your opponent by sheer ox like bulk, it's all down to ability and clever thinking.
The gentlemen circled each other warily, both ready to parry.
But than Subaltern d'Blancheur lunged forwards! Only to be met by Captain Fitzbraose's parry and quick riposte, leading to a wound on the arm.
And so the duel was over.
Congratulations to Captain Fitzbraose and congratulations to both men for the gentlemanly way in which this affair has been resolved. You do yourselves and your respective regiments credit, sirs.

ROME and its influence on the Parisian church
By Pastor Jacques
If it was up to ME I would not over PROMOTION to a clergyman facing an eccestical tribunal. But it seems that ROME disagrees as Dieudonné Lachapelle finds himself a ABBE in the church.
This may be a MISTAKE as the tribunal found him GUILTY on charges of SLANDER most FOUL against Monsigneur Robin and HELEN Bacque.
Robin is not a HERETIC just a DRUNKARD. And Ms. Bacque is not a WHORE. So we shall hear those MUTTERS no longer.
The tribunal FINED Monsigneur Lachapelle 200L for his BEHAVIOUR. Some might say he got off EASY but he apparently does not have MONEY and will be sent on a MISSION to PERSIA at the start of February to pay it back.
I wish him all the GOD has PLANNED on his trip.

Reports from the Front by General Georges Boulle (rtd.)
Things just go from bad to worse for poor old Marsaud. He was caught trying to escape this month and the savage bastards responded by torturing him for a week. They must pay for this. I hope his Majesty sends us against the Savoyans this summer.
I hear that Baron Lagarde de Bearne gained great notice at court this month. Well done to him for knowing which spoon to use for soup. Now, onto men actually fighting for King and country.
Mentions in Dispatches: Baron Lagarde de Bearne
The Spanish Frontier saw no action after last month's pacification, with troops largely staying in their barracks.
Flanders however was unexpectedly fierce, with our brave lads getting into a skirmish and taking heavy losses. It looks like next month's fighting there will be far heavier as the enemy troops show no evidence of slowing down the pace.
Nothing of note from Lorraine, where the enemy stayed quiet.
It seems like it was a sensible tactical move to go on alert in Savoy, where several inconclusive clashes took place. Still, it seems like the Savoyans are running out of energy.
Next Month's Deployments
Spanish Border - HL 2 (Garrison), Garrison Flanders - HL 6 (Skirmishing), Defense Lorraine HL 2(Garrison), Garrison Savoy HL 2 (Garrison), Garrison

News From the Ivory Tower By Professor Blanchent
The recently appointed Astronomer Royal, Monsieur Mathieu Gaudin, tells me that he has been making some fascinating observations of Jupiter's 'Red Spot' at the Royal Observatory over the Winter. I look forward to hearing a most interesting paper on the subject in due course.
I am delighted to announce that His Majesty has seen fit to reappoint my unworthy self as Curator of Royal Library.
Finally I would like to draw the attention of all Fellows to the fact that the Director of the Royal Academy of Science, Baron Max Rodin, will be appointing fellows to the posts of Royal Chemist and Royal Botanist this month. At the time of writing the only applicant, for either post, is our newest Fellow Docteur Armand Livarot.

Medical Matters by Docteur Armand Livarot, FRAS
His Majesty has reappointed Baron Rodolphe Alméras as Royal Physician (despite his inability to get to the bottom of the mysterious death of Doctor Guiseppe Spaghetti). Similarly, Monsieur George Porget has reappointed Doctor Guy Rampillon as Resident Physician at the Lady's Slipper, despite concerns regarding his behaviour having been voiced by a number of the ladies in his charge. (Monsieur Porget may have a fine eye for horseflesh and fillies generally, but he doesn't know a good doctor from a talentless quack).
I was most disappointed to find myself the only Parisian of note improving his medical knowledge at the University this month. Hopefully others will develop an interest in this noble profession in the future. The standard of teaching has improved considerably since I last attended. Indeed, one of the lecturers unconsciously suggested a possible subject for my next treatise for the Royal Academy. The idea certainly seems to deserve some further research.
