While joining a Club is optional, most characters will wish to do so for the bonus Social Points provided each month.
There are a wide variety of Clubs, stratified by Social Level. These range from Red Phillips (the only Club most commoners will be eligible to join on their arrival in Paris) to the Fleur de Lys (far too elite for any starting character to join).
A character may only be a member of one club at a time and is automatically excluded if they don't have the funds to pay their dues or if the membership requirements are no longer met. Characters get Status Points from belonging to a Club even if they don't visit the Club that month.
Mistresses are welcome at Clubs but any carousing costs must be paid by their lover.
Joining a Club
Joining a Club is a pre monthly action and acceptance is automatic if the requirements are met.
If you join a new Club you are automatically assumed to resign from your current Club.
Carousing
Unless specifically ordered otherwise a Character is assumed to carouse when visiting a Club, costing his SL in Livres and gaining one SP. A Mistress will need her carousing costs paid for, equal to her SL in Livres (a high status Mistress will expect higher quality drinks than her lover!)
There is a chance of both characters and their mistresses becoming excessively drunk when carousing which can lead to random results both positive and negative. If you wish to automatically get excessively drunk, that can also be ordered!
The effects of Drunkeness do not apply at Fleur De Lys or Bothwells (where drunkeness is too socially frowned upon to be considered) or the Bawdyhouse (where nobody cares how drunk you might be).
Gambling
Gambling can take place at a Club or the Bawdyhouse with a maximum of 9 bets a week with each bet being no more than the house limit.
For each bet, both the gambler and the house roll a die with the highest roll winning. (The house wins ties). The gambler can cut their losses depending on the house roll, with losses being cut in half rounded up. (Orders should say something like "cut on 5 or 6).
For each bet won the gambler gains 1 SP, for each cut or loss they lose 1 SP. The total amount bet is divided by the house divisor (rounded down) and additional SP are awarded accordingly.
Example: Renald bets an extravagant nine bets of 100 Livres each at the Frog and Peach. He wins 4 bets, loses 3 bets and cuts 2 bets. First, he loses 1 SP (4 wins - 5 cuts/losses). Because he cut twice he breaks even financially (4 x 100 winnings, 3 x 100 losses, 2 x 50 cut losses). He divides the total amount bet (900) by the house divisor (75) giving him an additional 12 SP for his extravagant gambling. He comes out of the gambling with 11 sp and no financial losses. A good week!
The Bawdyhouse has no house limit or divisor.
