OOC: from the thread about Major Marsaud ransom: Friends, If the funds raised are unneeded, through rejection, then maybe they can be kept as a fund for future cases? Arnold d'Blancheur Subaltern, Cardinal's Guard IC:Agreed, that's what I suggested when I proposed the collect in my own party if the money was not outright needed. What does people think about it? If we agree to start it, I vow to hold parties for fund raising to that end from time to time (one per season, if possible), and we should agree who would be the depositary (I'd suggest more than one person, both to avoid any temptation and to avoid it be frozen if the person i ncharge is captured/killed himself). Captain Huillaume de Béarne,
That sounds like something for the Lawyers, perhaps they can create some sort of bonded scheme. A guardsman such as yourself, who does not risk himself at the front, would be the next best option.

Captain Huillaume de Béarne, That sounds like something for the Lawyers, perhaps they can create some sort of bonded scheme. A guardsman such as yourself, who does not risk himself at the front, would be the next best option. Arnold d'Blancheur Do you know about some trustworthy lawyer for this? I personally have been little time in Paris (and most of it devoted to the Military Academy) and have had no time to know too many people... About taking risks, everyone going to war takes them, and while as Guard we both are unlikely to, we can nonetheless found ourselves to th efront, be it because we have to paydebts, because my Marchal goes (remember, I'm an aide) or because the King goes. And in any case, as said, I would not want to be alone in this, as temptation might arouse (I try to be honest, but I'm human nonetheless, and any priest can tell you about how Devil can tempt anyone). This does not mean your trust does not honor me. Yours Captain Lagarde de Béarne King's Foot Guards OOC: please, see there's a poll in this thread for people to vote if this is a good idea or not. I'd like to have as many votes as possible before deciding, but I'd like to close it this same turn.

OOC: CG are least likely of the Guards to go to front. We have no Paris Guard characters. Arnold will never have debts he cannot pay (probably!)

Gentlemen,
I must confess that I can see little useful purpose in such a fund at this time. Subaltern d'Blancheur may have surplus cash reserves to allocate to such a scheme, but the majority of Parisians -myself included - must currently keep a close eye on every sous. To needlessly tie up cash when it is not actually required seems quite ill-advised in such circumstances.
I know Major Marsaud personally - we attended Church together on a number of occasions - and am happy to do what I can to secure his release. Should his ransom be refused, however, I have no intention of allowing my contribution to be set aside for the future help of some gentleman who may well be a total stranger - or worse - to me.
Sincerely,
Madam Helen Bacque

OOC: The poll will be closed on Monday night or Tuesday morning, so that action can still be taken on the results.

Mes gentilhommes et dames, I personally believe that the best we can do for our captured comrades-in-arms is to trounce the enemy severely! Once we have a sufficient number of them captive, a prisoner exchange can be arranged, and all prisoners returned home. Surely that would be the best thing to do, both for our comrades and France? And if people are willing to risk their lives to attempt a rescue, they should consider that such bravery could better assist both their mother country - and their comrades - in battle! I trust the views of a newcomer to Paris are not unwelcome.

Monsieur Fitzbraose,
Since it was I that initially put forward the suggestion of a rescue attempt for Major Marsaud, albeit with the clear directive that any such attempt would surely need the leadership of a military man, I assume you recent comments are directed at me.
As a civilian, indeed a budding artist, I do not believe that I have either the skill or the constitution to serve my country in the Army. My focus is to better society through art and culture whilst, at the same time, giving what support I can to those who do their best to protect our country by pursuing a military career. Hence the reason for my offer to assist in a rescue attempt if one was arranged.
I would suggest that before you cast doubt and inference over a gentleman's courage you take some time to compose your words in a far more agreeable way.

Monsieur Flump,
If I have inadvertently given offense, pray excuse my stumbling tongue. I had no intention of casting aspersions on anyone's courage - indeed, I have only the deepest respect for those who would take such risks to secure the rescue of one of our compatriots.
In my clumsy way, I was merely trying to suggest that such bravery would better serve us all in the defeat of our enemy, and the prospect of a prisoner exchange.
I certainly accept that there are other ways of inspiring the nation than military might; one only has to view the martial works in the Palais du Louvre to find one's soul stirred.
I trust I have not irrevocably offended your good self by my unfortunate phraseology.

Monsieur Fitzbraose,
I thank you for taking the time to respond to me and for your clarification. Let us consider the matter a simple misunderstanding.

OOC:
With a 7:2 vote, I see no reason to keep the poll, seeing there's no interest on this idea.
