Any individual character may have their own RP determined goals from the immediate (get accepted into the Cardinal's Guards) to the long term (get a treatise accepted by the Royal Academy) to the outrageous (become Minister of War).
But if there's one overarching goal shared by almost all characters it's likely to be to raise their
Social Level
Social Level measures how important you are in Parisian society. In a society as status conscious as Paris everyone is aware of where they stand in relation to other gloryseekers, so it can be considered IC knowledge.
You raise your Social Level by gaing Status Points and lose it by not gaining enough Status Points.
Pretty much any activity can gain you Status Points (club membership, being in a regiment, making art, going to war, Mistresses, winning duels etc).
The Short Version
Each month you need to achieve a number of Status Points equal to your Social Level to maintain it at its current level. To raise in Social Level you need to garner four times your current Social Level in Status Points.
When at the Front or on an Expedition no changes are made to Status Point total and the total will be carried over when the character returns to Paris.
With a handful of exceptions (mainly getting a title) it is only possible to gain or lose one Social Level per month.
The Long Version
This goes into the maths for those that are interested. For those who aren't feel free to skip; this will all be handled at the GM.
You may carry over Status Points from a previous month. Any excess/deficit over/under 2x Social Level is retained.
If you raise your Social Level (requiring 4x your current SL) it costs you 3xSL in Status Points, then you carry any excess/deficit over/under 2x SL over.
If you fail to achieve your Status Level in Status Points you drop a level and then carry over either 2x the new Social Level or the full number of points whichever is lower.
Example
That all may seem a bit complicated, so here's an example to help explain it.
This example all uses a character with a Social Level of 8 as its base, we'll call him Fred.
Fred only manages to get 6 Status Points. This is lower than his Status Level, so Fred drops to Social Level 7. He carries over all 6 points to next month (this is lower than his new status level of 7 x 2).
Fred gains 18 Status Points, enough to keep him at his current level. We take off 2 x his Social Level in Status points (16), leaving him 2 Status Points for next month.
Fred gains 34 Status Points, enough to raise his Social Level to 9. This costs 3x his current Social Level (3x8 = 24) so there are 10 Status Points left. We then take off the standard 2x SL (2x8=16). This leaves a defict of 6, meaning Fred starts next month with a Social Level of 9 and -6 Status Points. He's going to need to make sure to work hard to keep his new Social Level!
