Hi all, I'm posting this with the gracious consent of King Louis. As I alluded to in another thread, back in 2011 I started work on an automated En Garde game via a website interface. Recovering from surgery and not having a job right now means I have plenty of time on my hands and joining Liminal prompted me to think about the project. By a weird quirk of fate I found the source code for the project on a USB memory stick while looking for something else and I've been working on it for about a week now. There's still lots of work to do but it's just about at the stage where I feel it's worth getting other people's opinions on it and letting them have a look and play with it. What's it all about? One of the things I've discovered with En Garde played over the internet over the past 15+ years is how prevalent GM burnout/dropout is. Every game I've been in has folded while waiting on a turn to be processed and released back to the players. The driving force of my project is to eliminate any laborious, repetitive or downright time consuming process from the GM. I want to get to the point where by clicking a button on the website, he or she can run the turn in a very short space of time, receive a report from the website that breaks down the turn into easily digestible output for content writing (who courted who, who attended what party, who died at the front etc) and for players to be able to see their turn outcome instantly or when the GM is ready for them to (I'm undecided on whether to couple the feedback to players with the turn "write up" or not at this point). What's the catch? In order to automate any ruleset, we need to parse the orders from players into a standard format which does have some drawbacks. As a player you won't be able to have multi-layered conditional orders with true/false gates into infinity on any conditions you like. This cuts down on some options for players for sure, those used to being able to send a narrative set of orders to a GM are going to see a difference. The more complex the ruleset the more difficult the coding is to get it right and to ensure that user experience isn't drastically impacted. However I believe that the benefits of the system can outweigh the downsides, hence why I am pursuing this. If it turns out to be a fool's errand then I'm only wasting time I'd otherwise be spending watching crap daytime TV or playing PC games anyway What's the goal? Ideally I'd like to have a system that's capable of running a "basic" En Garde game (I say basic but in programming terms it's anything but simple) encompassing the military career and Parisian social side of things by the end of the year if not before. I already have working code for a whole raft of components and am essentially melding several other rulesets together in my own. Here's what I've got working so far; New character creation Player/user registration, login, logout Character view with current orders & past turn results by month. Loans - borrowing and paying back Gambling - wins/cuts/losses & SP gains Carousing Club membership Toadying at events Support / conspicuous consumption regimental rivalry duels at events Mistress courting, doorstep duels, and FC/accompanying to events. Announcements of applications to regiments, requests for NPC's to resign, requests for excused duty. Announcements of "events" currently just parties at clubs. Basic Forum to support the game - threads created by the above announcements automatically go into the IC forum and there's a bug/suggestions and general area too. Extra fora are easily created and potentially could involve locked regimental forums for insider plotting. Order input - premonthly (loans, purchase of ranks, use of influence against announcements, joining/resigning clubs), weekly (events, clubs, courting, barracks, home(recuperation), bawdy house) and conditional orders (based on either application or prior week success/fail - 1 condition only). Turn automation and summary output for GM/content writers. Automatic Greasy Pole and mistress and regiment members. Personal and mistress influence accrual. Mistress SL increases I'm right in the middle of the Front mechanics and frontier regiments and some associated military appointments which inevitably has changed and broken some of the previously working elements. Still on the roadmap are the following items; housing volunteering commands volunteering for the frontier regiments arranged duels (duels with cause which aren't immediately fought - courting someone else's mistress for example creates cause which does work, but there's no mechanism to fight the duel yet) coping with insufficient funds mid month - my play test character is currently -6 crowns in debt Setting of deadlines and restrictions thereof. Aesthetics & branding/imaging. This will be significant as it will likely change the impression players have of the system in it's current form from "urgh" to "ooooh" once it looks nice. It's also the bit I am probably least good at given I'm about as creative as a dead fish. However I'm tentatively calling the project "Vive Le Roi" (someone will now tell me that's already been used ) so at least I have a name! If you would like to take a look, I'll be posting up the address and some logins you can use to view some testing characters in the next few days. Ideally I would love to have some of you volunteer to playtest when I'm ready for it. Thanks all. Oh and don't worry about upsetting me or offending me if you think this is a fools errand. Please say so and why because if players won't use it, then it really will be.

I think handling the basics automatically is a great idea. Having players use some kind of template for orders makes perfect sense. Punched cards, perhaps?
My orders spreadsheet generally becomes more complex each turn as I add tables to calculate SP automatically. I added parties last month. I just can't be bothered working it all out manually each time, and I have only one character's sheet to work out!
Where someone really feels they need more flexibility, their weekly orders could be flagged for manual resolution. (Pevans does something similar.)

You should be able to log in to any (except the gavin account which is my admin one) of them to have a play using the character name as both login name and password. Feel free to create some events, announcements and some orders and get a feel for what I'm trying to do. There aren't any appointments yet live so that functionality won't work. Please note that this is in a rough WIP state right now and doesn't look particularly pretty. I'm going for function over form until it's all working.

You should be able to log in to any (except the gavin account which is my admin one) of them to have a play using the character name as both login name and password. I tried this, with numerous characters, but kept getting a '* Invalid password' message. Looking good though

Ah. That would be an issue. I suspect it's down to using capitals?? Sorry, I should have said. All usernames and passwords are lowercase so "marcel" and "marcel"

So, a productive morning means I think I now have the front and some military appointments working and I'll get the website updated sometime this afternoon with the latest version. Just for example, this is the turn output that the GM see's when running a sample turn with 8 characters having entered various applications/announcements and one event. For reference this ran in under 2 seconds.
