Dearest Father,
I am writing to inform you that I have secured quarters here in Paris. They are small, but clean enough and afford a pleasant view of the Seine. They will do until I can afford something more appropriate.
I know you do not approve of my decision to move to Paris. Please understand that I fully intend to do my duty as your son and heir when the time comes, though may God in His mercy grant that may be many years in the future. But you must acknowledge, Father, that our lands are not as prosperous as they once were. I do not blame you for this; I know that the drought has meant our income from the villages is much depressed. You must see why I had to find my fortune elsewhere.
Don't you see, Father, that Paris affords us the best chance of gaining the support of other nobles, and perhaps gaining the patronage of the King himself? I know you hope to join our family to another to whom Fate has been kinder, but nothing I do shall interfere with that. Indeed, I may be able to make connections to help further that goal.
I know, too, that you will say I do this merely for the sake of my art. Believe me when I say that our family's welfare is and always shall be paramount in my heart.
I remain Your Obt. Son,
Aurele
