Father Dieudonné Lachapelle Character Background
Born in 1605 in province of Languedoc in Southern France, the second son of a well to do gentleman Dieudonné’s early childhood was almost idyllic, his father Gabriel was a land owner and had a reputation in the village as a friendly and generous man. He was happy in his station and had no intention of rising higher.
As he grew older Dieudonné started to clash with his father and his worldview, he believed that he was too soft upon the villagers giving them ample time to pay off debts with very little interest, in addition his father had no ambition for him for his two sons. He planned to pass on the estate to the oldest brother Victor and expected Dieudonné to make his way in the priesthood leading a simple life devoted to god. Dieudonné who enjoyed the finer pleasures in life felt the priesthood was the last place he wanted to be. He loved god, but often worried God would not look past his discretions.
At the age of twenty he entered seminary in order to begin his training, to his surprise it was not quite the bore he expected, yes on the surface priests had to be seem as humble servants of god, but he quickly found enough contemporises who lived to enjoy life like he did. And the more he learned the more he realized the power he could gain if he climbed high in the social ranks. After all what was good for him would be good for the church, he was nothing if not a devoted servant.
Aged twenty five he become a priest and was given his first parish in the heart of France itself Paris, his heart filled with joy, this was exactly the place he wished to be, from the small beginnings fame, glory and political power would be his.
