To be delivered to the Judicial Vicar in the case of Abbe Robin
In the name of The Most Powerful Host and Our Lord I send greetings.
It has been brought to my attention that during the previous month some mean spirited parishioner, no doubt motivated by a fit of pique or influenced by the most scandalous and heretical assault upon the Abbe committed by Father Lachapelle, has laid accusations against the Abbe.
As you are aware I was present at the gathering, if one could call it such, as a guest of Abbe Robin. While I did not indulge myself beyond that which Our Lord would clearly understand as appropriate, the Abbe was of a good cheer and did appear to consume more than would be prudent if seen by a layman.
I would dispute the narrative being spread by the Abbe's enemies as both misinterpreting the nature of the Abbe, being naturally gregarious and outgoing, and also carrying with it the meanest of spirit. He was far from being the out of control, far from being a lecherous lout molesting any female that passed our table!
No, for I clearly remember only one occasion where the Abbe stopped a lady who may well have had a less than Godly reputation to inquire as to the nature of the brocade of her dress. If there was any incidental contact between them it can be easily explained as the Abbe was seated and reaching upwards!
While by rank and standing I may not be acceptable to the court as witness, I will gladly stand in defense of the Abbe against these charges.
With humblest thanks and trust in Our Lord's will
Father Bassee
