Support
Support pays for all your character's basic living costs (food, clothing, servants etc.) and costs twice your Social Level. Eacn horse you own (necessary for cavalry regiments and military officers of rank Captain and above) costs you an additional 5 Crowns.
It is absolutely vital that your character has the funds to support themselves every month, to the point this should be a top priority. Any character failing to support themselves will automatically drop one Social Level!
If you think you're going to need more funds to support yourself there are various possibilities from joining a regiment to going to the Shylocks to working (frowned upon socially). If all else fails consider going to the Front with a Frontier Regiment. (This is highly risky but you might get plunder).
Conspicious Consumption
A character hoping to get noticed can splash out more money and gain Status Points from their profligate spending. Conspicious Consumption can be set at any level between 1 and 4, gaining that number of Social Points monthly for as long as the spending continues.
The full table can be found on page 8 of the House Rules, but it's worth noting that Conspicious Consumption becomes proportionally more expensive the higher level you go.
Conspicious Consumption 1 is relatively cheap, only costing you 3x your Social Level (instead of the normal 2x Social Level for Support). If you want to go all the way to Conspicious Consumption 4 however that will cost you a whopping 14x SL!
While optional, people who write an imaginative account of how they're spending the extra money may find it reported in the Press and bonus SP given out. (This is subject to the law of diminishing returns, so writing about your new hat will only work once!)
Housing
Technically a different topic to Support but it's similar enough in terms of consideration to be in the same thread.
Like many things, what housing you're eligible for depends on your Social Level. (Table on Page 83 of the House Rules). Having just moved to Paris, all characters start with just a room. This has the advantage of helping characters financially at first - Rooms cut your support costs to 1x SL.
However, rooms also lose you 1 Status Point each month, so many characters (apart from those at Social Level 1 and/or with serious financial issues) will want to spend a weekly action in the month after their arrival buying at least an Apartment. (This only costs 5 Livres, but does put your Support costs at normal from the month after onwards).
The better the house the higher Social Level it requires, the more expensive it becomes and the most Status Points it gives you each month.
A word of warning though. If you can't afford to pay for your house's monthly costs you will automatically lose a Social Level. If you also don't have the money for Support this can lead to you leading two Social Levels in one month!
